I had zoned out… again. I am staring at the love of my life a.k.a. one of my best friend, Stephen Gomez. I know it’s cliché to have a crush on your best friend, but I can’t help it and lots of people have a crush on their friends. Anyway, it’s never going to happen. He has a girlfriend and they are totally in love.

“You ok, Jess?” Brian asks, snapping me out of my daydream. “You haven’t even touched you food or should I say animal remains,” he joked. I look up into his laughing green eyes.

“Just because you guys are vegetarians doesn’t mean the rest of the world has to be too,” I counter sarcastically. I’m not really mad; I need my meat.

“Just kidding, Bowen,” Brian responds, stating the obvious. It’s hard for Brian Logan Dales to be serious. He was the class clown type.

I love Brian, but he takes nothing serious. He has tons of girls after him with those bright green eyes and light brown hair. He always has us laughing, though and was a great friend. He’s always sticking up for us and is an awesome guy.

“Same here, Dales,” I tell him coldly. I reach for my turkey sandwich as my stomach growled. How ironic.

“What’s with you anyway, Jess?” John Gomez, Stephen’s brother asked. He looks concerned. John’s a good friend. I feel like I have known him forever, even though it has only been since seventh grade.

John’s sometimes really hyper, but he means good. He’s an awesome guy and I’m happy to have him as a friend even if he’s kind of weird. He has untamable, curly brown hair that he sometimes pushes back with headband and chocolate brown eyes, which are sometimes hidden behind lens less glasses. His looks might not be top-notch, but that doesn’t matter in a friend.

Josh Montgomery also shared our table. He was blonde haired and blue eyed. He, like

Brian, took little serious and was always laughing. Josh was also a good friend, with a goofy grin and a great sense of humor. He always looked out for us.

Then there was Stephen, who was sitting with his fucking girlfriend. It was like he was trying to kill me. I loved him. Everything from his straighten brown hair, to his gorgeous chocolate brown eyes, to his beautiful half smile and those lips… He was the most beautiful guy to ever walk the Earth, but Kelsie had him in her clutches. Funny thing is that Kelsie and I were friends just a year ago. At least Stephen was happy, but we never saw him anymore. That was the main reason Brian, Josh, and even John weren’t exactly speaking to each other right then.

“There she goes again,” Josh comments with a sigh. He waves his hand in front of my face to get my attention.

“Everything’s fine, guys. I’m just a little… preoccupied right now,” I respond. I take a sip of my fruit punch as our other friend, Ryan Steele, comes up to us.

“Hey, guys,” he greets as he takes a seat next to me and smiles. Is it just me or is he smiling directly at me?

Justin Godsey, Vic Chan, Logan Thayer, and Tyler Horton surround our table. They take seats around us and suddenly all start talking. I, of course, was still in my own world, thinking about Stephen.

“You ok?” Ryan asks with genuine concern in his voice. He turns to me with worry in his hazel-ish eyes.

I sigh. “Just thinking,” I answer and force a smile.

“Wanna talk about it? You might feel better,” he suggests, running a hand through his straight light brown hair.

“Thanks, Ryan, but this is kinda personal,” I respond. I really kinda want to keep this on down low as long as humanly possible.

He looks kind of hurt, but quickly covers it up by saying “Ok, well, if you do want to talk, I’m here,” he tells me with kindness in his voice. He smiles and I smiles back.

We are silent for a minute. Then he blurts out the last thing I ever thought he would say: “Do you wanna go out sometime?” Yeah, he actually asked me that. He seems really nervous and he’s a really great guy and a good friend. What could I say to him? If I say no, everything would be really awkward between us, but if I say yes, then I would probably think about Stephen the whole time. Sigh.

“Um... sure, Ryan,” I answer tentatively. I’m not sure how I feel about a date with Ryan, but he was my friend. I couldn’t just say no, I would hurt his feelings. Ryan’s so nice, but I don’t like him like that.

Damn my feelings….
