I'm Alex. Most people don't really care what I am called, but Alex was the nickname I was given by my mother when I was born. My real name is Vincent Alexander Carson, so my name comes from my middle name as does my sister. I grew up with my mom. My mother divorced my father before I was old enough to really know who he was, but right now, that's fine. I have a step-father that I love dearly. Every now and then my mother will tell me things about my father that I hadn't known or did know and just wanted a refreshment on my memories. I grew up in a small area called Canton. This Canton was in the small, quiet state of Mississippi. Here I really didn't have many friends. I mostly piddled around in school until I got home, where I would play video games or do my chores.
Life was different at those times. I had a few things, but not much. At this point in life, I didn't care what I had or how much anything costs, I just enjoyed living. It was about that time in my life that nothing really mattered but family.
It was the year 2004, on a cold winter day, when I moved to Brandon, Mississippi. On that year, I was 3, almost 4, years old. I was enjoying a day at school, when I was called to the office for dismissal. This was peculiar to me. I had never left school early before and didn't really know what was going on. In my small, childish brain, I thought I was in trouble. I left the playground to the class to retrieve my things and headed out to the office. Trembling, I entered to find my grandmother, another strange occurrence. She had never really come to get me when school was over, so I was utterly confused.
We left the school and shot for the closest Wendy's. She got a burger and I got a kid's four-piece chicken nugget meal. Before I could finish my lunch, we arrived at a house. It had similar Christmas decor as ours. We stepped out of the car to see my parents coming up to me, shouting, "Merry Christmas, Alex! Merry Christmas!" It then struck me: We moved.
My first thoughts were- blank. I didn't know what to think at that point. I wasn't ready to move to a different house. I didn't mind changing schools, other than the fact that this was a more preppy school where social life is the life you have. This was a small school named Oakdale Elementary in a campus called Northwest Rankin in the Rankin County School District. Little did I know that I would come to love the place.
