"Jake!" said a woman's voice.
"Jake, do you know the answer to the question I just asked?" said the woman again, but impatient this time.
Blinking twice, Jake saw all the eyes in the classroom looking at him. He had no idea what the teacher just asked. Some of his classmates were already smirking. Miss Aubrey started talking again:
"Jake, please after school come see me in my office."
Great, he will receive another week in detention, Jake thought. All the teachers did that, like that could help him concentrate better. In fact, he had no idea what was his problem. Was he losing his mind? In the past month, he would wake up like from a deep sleep, but during the day and most of the time while he was in school. For this the teachers kept giving him detention and would threaten to call his parents regarding his behavior. He kept telling them he doesn't do it on purpose, but for no use. No one believed him. His grades were also worst then before. He was never brilliant, but at least he was average in school. Now, he was failing at almost all his subjects.
Jake Christopher Wilder was 13 years old. He was just a normal boy who enjoyed sports and video games. He had no brothers or sisters and he was living with his foster parents. They loved him and treated him like their own. His mother's name was June and his father's was Alan. They were both in their 50's now and gave up trying to have their own children a long time ago. They adopted Jake when he was 1 year old and told him the truth when they realized he was big enough to understand. He didn't feel less loved or abandoned. He never asked questions about his birth parents because if they didn't care why would he?
No one knew that Jake was adopted because he did not feel adopted and so, he didn't tell anyone. June and Alan were his real parents. They took care of him, loved him and always defended him. He was grateful to them and tried to get in as little trouble as possible. Sometimes it was really impossible, like troubles kept following him. Mostly because he was very good at sports and it did not matter what kind. He was in great shape and despite that, he wasn't taller, though he wished to be. His height was average and now even girls started outgrowing him. Since he was the best in school at sports, he was very popular, so the boys despised him. They were jealous of him and made fun of him whenever possible.
He had only one friend and her name was Sandra. They were neighbors, but didn't go to the same school. That was because Sandra was super smart. Unlike Jake, even though they were the same age, they couldn't be any more different. She was tall and lean, like a willow. She had fair skin and a lot of freckles. Sandra had orange hair and brown eyes, so Jake called her Ginger. She only allowed Jake to call her that because she hated her appearance. Sandra didn't like to stand out in a crowd, but it seemed impossible. The only place she liked being was at school. Jake knew it was some nerd's school she was attending that he had no chance getting into. Besides the fact that she was attending the nerd's school, Sandra also skipped a couple of classes. Being surrounded by 15 year old kids, Sandra didn't stand out so much. She wasn't the tallest in her class because there were also girls about the same height as her. Despite being his best friend, Jake never told Sandra that he was adopted. He was afraid of all the questions she would ask him and that she would not understand his lack of curiosity. Sandra was always, always curious, maybe it was the reason why she was so damn smart.
Jake stood outside Miss Aubrey's office and holding his breath he knocked on the door.
"Come in" said the teacher's voice.
He went inside, but what he didn't expect was his mom sitting in the chair across his teacher's desk. The office was small and filled with papers and books. Miss Aubrey was in her 40 and living by herself. After her husband passed away she dedicated her live to teaching and helping everyone. She was his favorite teacher. Miss Aubrey had a kind heart shaped face with soft wrinkles around her very dark eyes. Her light brown hair was always in a tight bun at the back of her head. She was always so peaceful that Jake liked just being around her. Right now, Miss Aubrey was pointing Jake towards the empty chair facing her desk.
