I woke up to the intercom on the plane blaring.
"We will be landing in 10 minutes, thank you for flying with Leefway today."
So clever, leefway. I looked out the window to see the proper terrain for Leefside, corn and trees. I mean Woodral is no better, river on one side and woods on another. Leefside with my aunt and cousin will have to do though, although I would like to know why my parents rushed me here for the rest of my senior year. 12 states away from my friends, but what can you do.
The plane landed finally after five cruel hours on the plane, I quickly exited and thanked the flight attendants. Now to look for my aunt and cousin, easy. My aunt was holding a huge sign that said 'Welcome Azzie'. I hugged my aunt and my cousin and I hugged tighter.
"I've missed having a best friend around Az."
"Me too Lottie."
"Alright, Scarlett lets go. We got to get her settled into your guy's new room."
"Did you guys move?"
I whispered to Scarlett, and she nodded with a smile.
"Our room is huge, I decorated it. And before you ask, yes your side suits you."
"Why'd you give me a decorated room? It's only for the school year?"
"Well.... just in case you wanted to stay longer. Hey, but Leefside has some cute boys running around. Maybe you'll meet a soulmate."
"Or a farmer who can barely walk straight with saggy pants."
Scarlett's nose scrunched at the thought, she always loved the pretty boys. I do wonder why she quickly briefed over the living situation. We hopped in my Aunt Vinnie's F150 and began the trek to the new house.
"Where's River though? Shouldn't he be with you guys?"
"No he's out with his friends, always is now a days."
"Wow, I never thought that kid would grow up."
"Don't be mistaken Az, he's still a child. Just muscular and a party animal."
Scarlett whispered the last part, I'm guessing Vinnie isn't aware of his shenanigans. We came to a gate shortly after passing a river and Vinnie put a code in the padlock. The gates opened and a monstrous house stood in eyesight.
"On this street is where all the 'rich' people live, actually we have the smallest house on the street."
"I'd hate to see the bigger houses, there's no way a house could get taller."
Coming from a place where big houses were two stories, this is the cherry on top. I stared at the house until I felt Scarlett nudge me.
"That was my reaction too, but come on. Let's get your stuff settled in my room."
We entered the massive house and Scarlett showed me to our room. Two full beds with nightstands on either side and a balcony between them.
"How in the world is this even possible? Also why're we sharing rooms if this house is so big?"
"I asked too, because honestly this room is too big for just me. As you can tell, I also felt like it was a good excuse to get to know you better since we haven't seen one another for years."
I nodded and went to my side of the room, knowing that the theme on my side suited me more. Lots of pastels, cacti, and very simple. While Scarlett's side was lots of blacks with touches of blues, pinks, and gold.
"Any boyfriends Lottie?"
"No, but get this. There's a bunch of kids transferring from the same place at the same time. I'd really hope that there's one guy there that can be the one, ya know?"
"I don't know, I believe that someone come in a time that you need them. Now exactly when you want them. If you got everything you want, you'd be spoiled. But getting everything you need with knowing you needed it, that's where success begins."
"Are you some quote writer? That was too deep."
I laughed and set up some personal items on my night stand.
"Hey, so River is at a guys house down the street. Tonight their having a party, wanna come? You can meet my friends, and maybe the new kids will be in town."
"I dunno Lottie, you know parties and that kinda stuff aren't my scene."
"Come on, please. It'll be fun, plus you'll at least know a few people before fall break ends."
Scarlett begged and gave me her big puppy eyes.
"Alright, fine. Let's get ready, I know you take forever."
She laughed and began her ritual of getting ready. No person should take that long, but then there's Scarlett. I unpacked my biggest suit case and hung all my clothes in the closet. Putting my undergarments and socks in drawers below. I began getting my outfit together for this party, I mean Scarlett is right. It's a good way to meet people, but I'm just not one to love partying and getting wasted. I grabbed a dark burgundy cardigan, white shirt, ripped jeans, and my white sneakers. I walked out from the bathroom add on and Scarlett was already dressed in one of her signature outfits.
"I'm almost ready Az."
"Almost ready like 20 minutes or almost ready like 5 minutes."
I said while laughing, all I got was a playful glare and she continued lathering mascara on. I quickly put on a natural makeup and waited for Scarlett to get done up.
"Okay, are you ready Az?"
"Yes."
I said laughing and we walked down the stairs. Two men had been sitting on the couch.
"River, we're ready."
"Yea we just got here, no big deal. Hey Azzie."
River hugged me and I looked at him weird.
"What?"
"When did you become a man? Where'd this muscle come from?"
I poked at his arm and River laughed with me and the guy next to him smiled.
"Az, this is Neil. My best friend, oh and the new kids are coming so we need to get over there. Azzie sits up front, Lot in the back with Neil."
"Bro, why not me?"
"Because Az is the baby sister, and doesn't sit with my horn-dog friends. I know they won't touch you, but Az is a different story."
"I don't need protection Riv."
"Don't care, get in. Neil, touch her we have to fight."
I got up front as Scarlett and Neil jumped in the back. River drove his Jeep and I laughed.
"Why're you laughing?"
"You're a Fray boy with a Jeep."
"Aspen Rosalind I will beat you."
He said through a laugh, and hit my arm. We pulled into a huge house and my anxiety rose.
"How the hell are you all so rich?"
"Lottery."
"Liar."
"Az, gooooo lets partyyy."
Scarlett urges and shook the seat. I got out and she linked arms with me after she jumped out. Music blared and I stopped.
"How m-many people are here Riv?"
River turned and grabbed my hand.
"Az, I promise it'll be okay. Come on."
River pulled me through the house and to the back porch. Scarlett followed and held my arm. Everyone was dancing, laughing, and drinking. Scarlett walked off and I stayed near a small fire, trying to calm my nerves. Only for a hand to land on my butt, I instantly swung.
"Who the hell do you think you are?"
I asked as the man hit the ground, River was beside me before I could hit him again.
"Austin, the fuck is wrong with you?"
"No, what the fuck is wrong with this whore?"
"You mean my cousin? Who just moved here and was sitting by the fire doing nothing."
River picked the guy up by the throat and held him.
"Riv, I think the black eye will do. Put him down... please Riv... Just please."
River threw him and walked away. I walked to the house and Scarlett tried to grab me.
"I knew this was a bad idea Lottie, I need to go for a walk. I cannot be here right now."
I walked out of the house and went to the road. Walking the opposite direction of my home for awhile. I came across a bridge and sat on the small railing. Staring at the stream, trying to clear my mind and not think about the bruising handprint.
"Darling, don't fall."
I jumped and felt a hand lightly touch my waist.
"Would you please come on this side of the railing?"
"If I fall, it's okay."
I was picked up and pulled on the other side.
"Darling that's not a good way to think."
I was met with a tall man with bright green eyes. I pushed away and leaned on the railing.
"You should find your way home darling."
"Maybe you should."
As I said that my phone buzzed uncontrollably. My aunt. I answered and she was sobbing uncontrollably, and the man lightly touched my arms.
"Vennie breathe, where are you? Are you okay?"
"They knew you'd be safe here... you'd be loved if they left..."
"What happened Vennett?"
"They're dead... honey I knew..."
My phone dropped and I felt the man grab me.
"Darling, breathe. It'll be okay."
I fell to the ground but didn't hit hard.
"I need to get you away from this bridge darling."
"No, just... let me..."
I was picked up and he began walking. I balled my eyes out in the mans arms, he only set his head on my forehead.
"I'm going to take you into my house so I can watch you, try to keep you comfortable."
I heard the door open and was set on a cushion.
"Don't move darling, please."
I covered my face and tried to keep my breathing under control but it didn't work. I felt my hands get moved and the green eyes stared at me again.
"'Breathe."
I watched his eyes move in and out, but was concerned with why.
"Why're you're eyes dilated?"
His eyes got wide and another person entered.
"She can't be immune, it's to soon for her to even get a taste of whatever the hell that stuff is called."
I tried to turn to look at her but my face got held.
"Try to relax darling, we need to figure some things out. What's your name?"
"Aspen, what's yours and hers?"
"I'm Francis and my sister is Florence."
I nodded and sat back.
"Why did you bring her here?"
"She was trying to jump off the bridge into the fast current. Then got a bad phone call, so I don't know where she lives. But I wasn't going to let her die."
I felt someone sit behind me and nails run thorough my hair.
"Sweetheart, as much pain as your in now. Imagine your family feeling that if you leave, imagine people your age feeling like this."
Florence put my head in her lap and wiped my tears.
"What's your last name sweetheart?"
"Abbot."
"Your related to the Caroline's?"
I nodded and winced when I tried to pull my leg forward.
"Francis, I need to talk with her about some things. Would you go upstairs so she's more comfortable answering?"
Francis left and Florence put her hand on my arm.
"Why're you in pain Aspen?"
"A guy smacked my butt at some stupid party so I hit him, and now I can barely move my leg."
"Alright, I know you don't know me. But can I help you to my room so we can get you changed and I can see the damage?"
I nodded and she helped me up this beautiful staircase.
"Your house is really pretty Florence."
"Thank you, my mother designed it."
We got to a primarily royal blue room and she gave me some clothes to change in too.
"Florence I can't walk anymore."
I said leaning against her bathroom door frame. Florence came to me and brought me in front of the mirror, I lifted the shorts and a black handprint was on my butt.
"Aspen, your hip has to be broken. There's no way."
Francis came in and saw, Florence instantly pulled the shorts down but it still showed lower on my thigh.
"I can fix your hip Aspen, Flor trust me."
Francis picked me up and brought me down many stairs into what looked like a cellar.
"Hey, I'm not comfortable being here Francis. Please let me go."
I tried to push but he set me on a table. I went to move and winced.
"Aspen, I'm only feeling your pelvis. Nothing else, I needed you here in case you screamed. The neighbors would be terrified."
I nodded and he began taking his belt off.
"Fran..."
"I need you to bite on the leather darling, it'll hurt."
I nodded and he put the belt in my mouth.
"Hold it and don't move."
I nodded and laid my head on the table. Only to feel him press on my hip, I jumped.
"Hurt?"
I nodded and he trailed the pressure up. I cried out and he took the pressure away.
"Darling, I'm going to press there again to see if I need to take you to the hospital. If your pelvis is fractured you'll need surgery."
I sat up and looked at him.
"No, it's..."
"Darling, you could dislocate your hip and not be able to have children if a part of your pelvis shifts. Please, allow me."
I laid back down and felt hands find mine. Florence held them and smiled. Francis presses again and hit a sweet spot, only to receive a scream.
"Fucking mutts, Darling I'm need to drive you to the hospital."
"No, please. If my cousins find out I went to the bridge I'll be on house..."
"I'm not going to tell them where we met, that's not how I roll. I respect you and your rights, now please."
I nodded and he picked me up, grabbing his huge jacket and Florence started the car. Francis kept me on his lap, pulling his jacket onto me.
"How do you know River and Scarlett?"
"Our parents knew each other before we moved away with our parents."
I nodded and began drifting to sleep, only to feel a tinge of pain.
"How does it feel best?"
"Straight, but I know it'll hurt."
"Any other way?"
"The way it is when you carried me."
"It probably relaxed the muscles and takes pressure off, I'm sorry I can't do that right now."
"It's okay."
I grabbed the jacket in a ball, trying to focus on something else.
"Please tell me you didn't make it worse Fran."
"Flor, I irritated it. Nothing the doctors wouldn't have done. Darling, grab my hand instead. I don't want your nails going into your hand."
I grabbed his hand and held it tightly, getting light headed.
"Aspen, you have to stay awake okay?"
"I'll try."
"Good girl, that's all I need."
I watched bright lights cross as we walked, and I was laying on a Doctor bed immediately.
"Full name."
"Aspen, darling. Full name."
"Aspen Rosalind Abbot."
"Vennett your guardian?"
"Yes."
"Alright Mr. Cleary, I trust you. I'm going to put you under Aspen."
"No, no what's happening?"
"Darling, he needs you asleep to evaluate you. I'm not leaving, you'll be safe."
I felt my eyes drop, thinking how this day could've went any worse.
