"Fuck, fuck, fuck," muttered Josie, throwing all the clothes on the floor of her closet out into her room. She couldn't find her gi, and drills started in ten minutes. Even though classes were taught on Brazilian time, the witch always liked to be early in order to stretch out and catch up with the other students.
Her hand grasped on a stiff collar and she pulled the missing article of clothing out of the mess and thrust it into the air in triumph. She stood, quickly donned her top, and messily secured her belt low around her waist.
She ran out the door, grabbing her water bottle on the way out, and rushed down to the gym.
She arrived in a huff with three minutes to spare. Several students gathered around the mats and cast her curious glances at her red face and hard breathing.
Josie ducked her head in embarrassment and walked to the side of the gym, taking off her shoes and setting down her water bottle.
A loud burst of laughter sounded from the group around the mat. She looked up and her eyes locked on her. Her head was thrown back in laughter, eyes shut, crinkled at the edges. The golden morning light streamed in through the windows at the top of the room, seemingly setting her hair alight, making it resemble a red halo. Josie stood up straighter, straightened her gi, and walked toward the group.
As she approached, a voice greeted her.
"Hey, Jo. You seemed a little out of breath when you came in. Couldn't find your gi again?" MG questioned.
She blushed, rolling her eyes at the boy.
"Shut up. Don't act like you haven't lost yours a thousand times before,"
MG grinned, eyes shining with mirth.
"True, but that doesn't mean I can't take the shit out of you when you lose yours," He responded.
"So what's up?" Josie asked, looking around the circle. It was the usual group: MG, Kaleb, Rafael, and Hope. "Anyone have any idea what we're drilling today?"
"Nope," Kaleb said. "I hope it's something good though. Knee on belly or arm bars. Side control can go to hell,"
"You only hate side control because I always tap you from it," Rafael interjected. "Good 'ol Americana baby,"
Just as Kaleb opened his mouth to tell Rafael off, two loud claps sounded from the center of the mat.
"Get running kiddos,"
Instructions received, the group began warm ups. Other students that congregated along the edges fell into line. All were happy to be there. Not a sour face, save for that of Landon. Josie caught sight of him and grimaced. That, was a a lot to unpack. She'd rather just throw out the entire suitcase. She glanced at the clock on the wall. Three minutes late. She smiled and followed the line of students.
Kaleb lead them around the perimeter of the mats, calling out various exercises. Shuffle, karaoke, cherry pickers. They finished running and lined up along the side of the mat. They did forward rolls, backwards rolls, shrimps, and bear crawls.
"Circle up," Kaleb called. They went around the circle, each student calling out a different set of ab exercises for them to do. They finished, and the instructor stepped into the middle of the circle.
Coach Nick was their resident gym teacher. He was a werewolf, turned when he was just in his teens. His story was known by most. When his curse was first awoken, he had a lot of trouble with anger and lashing out at those around him. The young man turned to athletics, specifically jujitsu and Muay Thai, then eventually MMA, to exercise his frustrations. He was new to the school that year, but they were far enough along in the semester that everyone was used to him and respected him.
