Spenta sighed and sat next to me. “I’m sorry” he muttered softly.
“For?” I didn’t even bother to look at him, it would only hurt my neck.
“This…all of this. You deserve a better life than this.” It was quite remarkable; being able to hear someone say that to me. Of course, I didn’t take his words seriously. There was little—no, there wasn’t any hope for me to life a normal life at all.
“ I tried…I tried to talk some sense into the others, that you were not meant to be a living sacrifice. They didn’t listen to me. They thought you had tainted my mind.” As he said this, his eyes began to water.
“I’m sorry for not being able to save you, brother. But trust me, I won’t give up. I will put an end to your misery, no matter how long it takes” the determination in his shaking voice was clear. He had high hopes for my future. It was somewhat heartwarming, but at the same time….pathetic.
“Why are you doing this?” I finally asked.
“ No matter what you do, they will never let me off. Even if you do manage to save me, do you really think I will be able to rehabilitate into society while looking like this? After all that I have been through at their hands? No, all of this has only made realize how pitiful you humans are.”
“But Angra—“
“Stop it. What you are doing is meaningless. I’m glad have not been accepted as one of you maggots.” I smiled mockingly as I turned my head to face him.
With a slight chuckle, I went on.
“Besides….there’s nothing left to live for. Heh….as if there was something to begin with.”
The teary-eyed maggot gave me a somewhat menacing look as I finished my sentence. A look terrifying enough to make me rethink of the possibility that maybe we are siblings.
“Stop saying that, please! There is a whole world outside of this tower, there’s so much to live for, so many places to visit, so many people to meet. There are millions of other people out there—“
“And who is being held responsible for their sins?” I cut him off with a rhetorical question.
He was about to say something, when all of a sudden, we heard footsteps climbing up the stairways to my cell. I chuckled as I saw Spenta’s worried face.
Quickly, as if he read my mind, he got up and chained me back to the wall. Luckily for him, he managed to do so fast enough before the keeper reached my cell. However, when he saw how close Spenta was to me, he panicked.
“Your Grace! Get back!” he shouted and within a split second, dashed to where Spenta was standing and pulled him away from me.
