"Kenton," I said again, reaching for his hand from where I stood in the door way of his bedroom.
"I said to stay here." his tone was stricter than it had been only a moment ago.
The voices sounding from downstairs rose, and Kenton pulled his hand from mine. "Just wait here." he said, craning his neck as he strained his ears against the sound of my complaints.
"Can I just come with you--"
The sound of shattering glass echoed through the house cuting me off completly. A faint voice was heard, then an aggressive shout I recognized to be Sandra.
Kenton fixed his attention back to me and as I was distracted he lifted me over his shoulder, carrying me to his bed, and roughly dropped me.
"I swear to God, Mckenna if you move from this spot--"
"Alright, alright!" I pushed at his hands, sick of being told no. "Just hurry up."
His eyes lingered on me a moment longer, almost challenging me to even consider disobeying him. Once he disappeared through the door I began to count to one hundred, listening as I did.
If I counted slow enough I knew he should return in time. If he didn't, then I'd cross the line by following him despite his orders.
I was on number sixty eight when Sandra's voice rang through the house. "Don't lie to me!"
Hearing her cry out the way she had, I completely lost count and decided it was worth upseting Kenton. I had to find out what was wrong because nobody deserved to sound as broken as she had.
I tiptoed from the bed, my lungs burning as I held my breath. "Not again!" her voice was harsh now. "I will not do this again."
The house went silent.
"I promise--" Nate.
"Don't you dare." she cried, her voice being carried through the house, soft yet bitter.
"Then what the hell else am I supposed to do?" Nate shouted. By then I was half way down the stairs.
Sandra stood on the opposite side of the table away from Nate, her eyes red and swollen from crying. Her chest rose and fell quickly, proving her exhaustion. I caught the slight shakiness from her hands to the quivering of her lips.
I couldn't see Nate's face, but when he spoke he seemed just as defeated as she had. "We've been over this--" he stopped mid sentence as she began to cry. "I have to be loyal to my pack, baby, you know that." his voice was delicate.
"And what about me?" she asked. "The last time you left you almost didn't come back. The both of you." she said angrily, waving her hand in Kenton's direction.
"You became his mate knowing the consequences. This is what he's ranked in the pack to do. He's devoted to protecting--" Kenton wasn't able to finish.
"I'm going." Nate said matter of factly. "And the fact our Alpha had to be included in this conversation again is embarrassing."
Sandra took a step back, her eyes holding such a pain that I, too, felt the ache in my chest. "I hate you," she mumbled, shaking her head.
Tears welled in her eyes. "I hate you." she stated this time.
The tension was thick and by the way Kenton was staring at her, the way the shock of her announcement had stricken him, was clear on his face.
I was almost glad Nate's back was turned to me. I couldn't begin to imagine the look upon his face.
