Amber's POV
I was at one of the only-Shadyside-famous parties thrown by Andi Mack, braiding a tiny section of my long, blonde hair and quietly singing "Born This Way" by Lady Gaga (because the song was catchy enough that it got stuck in my head) when I heard my phone begin to play a cover of "Prom Queen" I made just last week; someone was calling. Pulling the device out of my purse, I glanced at the caller ID. It was Mom... or "Anne" as my brother would call her. I swiped at the "accept call" option, then I could hear my mother's voice; "You and your brother might want to be home soon. Your weekend-only curfew is in ten minutes and you both have school in the morning. How long is the drive home from where you are? I can pick you up if you wan-"
"Mom, it's fine," I cut her off, "We can just walk home."
"Alright, well, I just want to make sure you get back before your father does."
"Got it. See you then. I'm hanging up in three... two... one..."
"Amber-"
BEEP.
The call had ended when my finger touched the "end call" option. I decided it was time to go now, so I took one last look at my phone with its pink, glow-in-the-dark glitter heart case, and slipped it back into my purse. "TJ!" I called out, "TJ!"
A little while later, a boy with gelled-up, dirty-blonde hair and green eyes shuffled reluctantly over to me through the large crowd, and sighed, "What is it now, Ambs?"
"Time to go," I replied, snapping my fingers in no particular fashion. "Mom called."
"Anne again? Why now? Why couldn't she let us sleep over like we suggested?" my brother frowned.
Rolling my eyes, I replied, "If we slept over, Mom and Dad would be worried about us and one of them would have to pick us up in the morning. We can't have that happening because Mom still thinks we're at Jonah's new place."
TJ mouthed an 'oh' to me, then said, "'Kay, then, let's go."
As we approached the front door, which was one of a few exits from the party, Andi's mom stopped me.
"Hey, you two," she smiled, "where are you going?"
"Home. It's getting pretty late."
"Got it. In that case, I'll go get Andi. Be right back. Don't move a muscle."
"Thanks, Mrs Mack." TJ and I said simultaneously.
"I may be married now, but Mrs Mack is still my mom. You guys know you can call me Bex, right?"
I facepalmed and TJ said, "Right, yeah, sorry. We just- forgot."
M- I mean- Bex just shrugged, still smiling, and told us we could probably call her anything that wasn't "Mrs Mack", including maybe even "the bisexual banana mom" (TJ asked, not me). After that, she took off to go find Andi.
"We don't even have mussels to move." TJ commented following a minute's awkward silence.
"I don't think I- oh my gosh, TJ! Did you actually just make a joke about a sea creature?"
He shrugged and smiled a smile that nearly resembled a smirk, and said "maybe," meaning yes, he did just make a joke about a sea creature.
"Aaaand we're back!" Bex exclaimed, and Andi was smiling as well, somewhat awkwardly in tow.
"Uh... Mom, why am I here?"
"Because," explained Bex, "Andi, these two are leaving now."
Andi still looked confused, and said, "There are a lot of people who have already left, and you didn't ask me to be there then."
