It was definitely no secret that Kageyama Tobio didn't have the best communication skills. He was stand offish and easily pissed. And where his limited vocabulary failed he used actions to prove his point.

The team would often joke that he'd never find an omega because he scares them off before he can even open his mouth (this was mainly from Tsukishima unsurprisingly).

But it turned out they were right.

Because Kageyama didn't mate with an omega, he mated with you, a beta.

You were one of Karasuno's volleyball managers. You were outgoing, a social butterfly, and with the energy to match Hinata and Nishinoya. You were basically the opposite of Kageyama in every sense of the word.

Watching Kageyama trying to court you was physically painful for the team to watch. He barely had the communication skills to court an omega, let alone a beta.

Alphas typically mated omegas and betas typically mated other betas for good reason: it was easier to understand the other side.

So the team would have to watch as Kageyama subtlety tried to scent you and your belongings while you weren't paying attention, which was useless because your sense of smell was no where near as strong as an alphas or omegas so there was no way you'd have been able to notice his lingering scent on you.

It took Hinata telling you that Kageyama had a crush on you for anything to finally happen.

You had been elated when he told you. You happened to like him back, the only thing that held you back from making a move was the thought that he'd rather be with an omega.

So as soon as you found out, you ran to Kageyama and confessed.

The rest was history.

Your relationship with him was pretty great. You understood his difficulty with communicating and were patient with him, but after a bit you had gotten pretty good at figuring his emotions out on your own. And he adored you. Sure, he may not have been the most affectionate with how awkward he was most of the time, but even just the thought of you with your wide grin and pretty laugh made his heart skip a beat.

He was truly grateful with how much you understood him, however as a beta, you couldn't really understand him as an alpha.

He knew it was in no way your fault, but it was definitely difficult on his part.

He found himself having to explain certain things he needed from you.

Like scenting, for example. It was something he had been doing when you weren't really paying attention. Subtlely running his wrist where his scent gland was down your arm and doing it to your bag when you were looking away. But it wasn't enough. Kageyama wanted you to smell only like him, not other alphas you may have casually brushed against in the hallways.

And one day you had been over to do homework with him when the opportunity to scent you properly arose— his only problem was trying to communicate it to you.

But you, as attuned as ever to your mate, had noticed the scowl on his face as he stared down at his homework on his desk. At first you thought he was just stuck, until you realized he was already finished with the sheet.

"Tobio," you hummed from your spot on his bed. He looked up at you, features softening. "Is something on your mind?"

"I-" The words got stuck in his throat as he looked at your head cutely tilted towards him. This was clearly his chance, he had been irritated all day because you smelled like another alpha, and so he was going to at least attempt to take his chance, "Y-yes."
