Infinite X Reader (A Sonic Forces Fanfiction)

Chapter 3

A few weeks had passed since Infinite and (Y/N) had had that talk about the girl's backstory. Since then, the leader of the squad had loosened up around her; now understanding her fascination with destroying Sonic. He couldn't help but admit that her sheer determination was admirable. But he had also grown accustom to the girl's overly cheery character, in fact whenever she was quiet it felt weird.

And with every mission the two went on, with every job they did for Eggman, every moment they were working together, the two only got closer. They figured out ways to do their security checks quickly and efficiently; 'as a team' Infinite made sure to say. Seeing (Y/N)'s eyes light up every time made him feel... Like a true leader? He couldn't really put his finger on it.

His other teammates would only snicker at him whenever he spent time with the newbie, Zoe seeming the least impressed with whatever they were laughing at. He had tried to question Zoe once, but she just huffed, shrugged and walked out of the room

After one particular mission, the two were scouting the area together. Once they were done checking everything, they stopped to head back to the base. As they jumped back, the female jackal let out a sigh, her ears dropping back as if in thought. Infinite took notice and stopped at the border of the forest; the girl stopped next to him, holding her arm almost self-consciously.

"What's wrong?" Infinite asked, tilting his head in confusion. She had seemed okay earlier today, but he had noticed she seemed... Bored... During their task.

"When will we get to the fighting?" (Y/N) didn't hesitate to get straight to the point, "All these security checks, no one is on our tail. Why can't we just attack now?"

"Because we're not ready." Infinite said, resting a hand on the girl's shoulder, "Eggman is still working to understand the Phantom Ruby. Once he has perfected it, then we'll be ready to fight."

"But we aren't doing anything right now." The girl said, lifting her (e/c) gaze to meet Infinite's heterochromic eyes, "It feels like we never will..."

"Trust me (Y/N), we will fight Sonic, and we will win." The leader said, "You just need some patience, alright? Your revenge will come, and we'll rule this world together."

"Together?" The girl's ears perked and she tilted her head.

"Yes, all of us, the Jackal Squad and Eggman. Though Eggman won't have his power for much longer after that either."

"Oh... Right!" The other shook her head, before smiling and nodding in agreement, "That sounds good, I can't wait!"

Infinite gave a small chuckle, lightly tapping the girl's nose, "Patience."

She giggled, her tail wagging behind her slowly, before they continue on back to the base. It was silent for a while, but the mood was good, Infinite felt relaxed, and (Y/N) was obviously feeling better, as she bounced around as they walked, a small skip in her step.

The forest thickened, turning into a moss-covered jungle; and if it wasn't for their recent trip into the city, Infinite could have believed they were the last two Mobians on the planet.

It felt like that anyway.

"You know..." The girl's voice piped up as they walked, "These past weeks have been alright; you guys are awesome."

"I'm glad you think so." Infinite nodded.

"Thank you for giving me this opportunity." She said casually, and the other blinked at her.

"It's our pleasure." Her boss said, "To be honest, we should have started recruiting new people ages ago. It's a shame we haven't found anyone else since, but keeping a low profile is more important right now anyway. We're glad to have you on our team. I think we've really become a family now."

The girl stopped bouncing, staring at Infinite for a while. Her eyes bore into the back of his head, and he stopped just before cliff leading to the base. Turning around, he raised a brow at her, about to ask her what was wrong when she ran at him and hugged him tightly.

The jackal was frozen, taken by surprise. He wasn't expecting, and therefore isn't accustom to receiving hugs; he just wasn't that close with his clan. But here one of the members was, her arms around him tightly and her body pressed against his. Should he hug back? How does he do that? His arms are currently pinned to his sides.

He could lift his elbows, he realised. But should he? Would it be weird to hug back? His heart felt like it was pounding in his chest. The jackal actually couldn't recall the last time he was hugged. It felt... Nice. And the longer he stood there, the more he felt he really should hug back.

But just as he went to lift his arms, the girl stepped back abruptly. Her cheeks were a light pink, and her stance was sheepish, almost shy.

"S-Sorry boss..." She said, her ears flopping forwards, as if embarrassed.

"It's...-" But he didn't get to finish the sentence, as the girl jumped down the cliff and darted into the open doors of the base.

The jackal just stood there, confused. Had he just got a sense of disappointment from his teammate? Why was that? And why did he feel like he had done something wrong? He huffed to himself, before shaking his head.

Girls were so confusing.

But then again, he was just as confused at himself.

Why? Because he too was feeling disappointed, and he didn't know why.

Yeah yeah it's a shorty. I'm sorry, but I was planning on it being short, as the next one is gonna be suuuper long! (or, that's the plan at least lol)
