Chapter 8

Infinite was floating in a black abyss -why was it always like this?- his body cold aside from the fire that burnt his side. What had that blasted hedgehog done to him? The jackal tried to move but found he couldn't. He was restrained, but by what? He couldn't move his head to find out. A light appeared above him and he tried to lift his head to see what it was. He hated this feeling of being stuck, frozen.

The light got brighter, and a hand reached town to cup his furry muzzle. The hand was warm, and he closed his eyes at the gentle caress. This felt familiar somehow, like a dream he had experienced multiple times. More warmth took over his face, and slowly Infinite opened his heterochronic eyes; finally, able to see the source of the light and familiarity.

(Y/N) was floating in front of him, a small and unsure smile on her muzzle. She tilted her head at him, before reaching to his side. When he flinched, she pulled her hand away, shaking her head. Slowly she leant down to his face, her lips moved but he couldn't hear anything. He could barely make out what she was saying through lip reading; but what the jackal was yet to realise would soon come to light.

He tried to speak, wanted to, wanted to ask what she was saying, what was going on. But he couldn't open his mouth. She smiled at him again, this time a warm, genuine smile, before she lightly kissed his muzzle, and disappeared.

The jackal awoke with a start. He tried to sit up, however realised he had been strapped to a table. There were tools on a tray beside him, and beeping could be heard coming from somewhere else in the room. His ears twitched as he heard footsteps and Eggman walked into the room, removing what looked like hospital gloves.

"Oh good, you're awake." He said, placing the gloves on the table. Infinite could tell the human was annoyed, but by what...?

"What... Happened to me...?" The jackal asked, noticing that the burn in his side was now gone.

"Sonic happened. That's what." Eggman huffed, unbuckling the straps around Infinite's body, "You fought him, and even in his weak state he still managed to damage you. He cracked the Phantom Ruby in your chest and it started to mess with your insides to try and fix itself."

"I... I see..." Infinite sat up, rubbing his head, "Sonic should not have been able to defeat me so easily, why was he able to do that?"

"Don't look at me, I wasn't the one that decided to fight him." Eggman shrugged, before he started cleaning the tools. His moustache twitched as the human thought to himself, "Where were you fighting anyway?"

The jackal let out a sigh, one of his large ears twitching, "The jungle base, where Shadow attacked."

"Then it was possible you were a tad distracted by past events."

Infinite growled in response, the thought that something so simple had distracted him and caused him to lose, even if it was his teammates, was humiliating. He told himself he wouldn't allow emotions to get in the way until he had his clan back, until he had (Y/N) back. Though the jackal could use this as a learning experience.

He let out a sigh and jumped off the table, checking the stone in his chest, he noticed it was slightly different.

"I had to replace the other one, it was too damaged to depend on." Eggman said before his ally could ask any questions.

Infinite raised his gaze to the human, giving a curt nod, "Thank you for your assistance Doctor, it's greatly appreciated."

"Well, I can't win this war without you." He said.

"I see, well I will make sure to fight better next time. I won't let anything distract me, and I'll crush that hedgehog if it's the last thing I do."

"You really have it out for Sonic." Eggman said, rubbing his chin, "Why not Shadow?"

"I'll get to Shadow, but I have a promise I intend to keep." Infinite huffed, turning his head away, "I don't think you'd understand. Plus, Sonic and Shadow work together, I can start hitting the lab rat where it hurts by killing another friend of his. Similar to Maria; if you will."

Eggman froze for a second, before nodding in silence. The jackal watched him, wondering if mentioning the cousin had an emotional effect on the doctor, before shrugging it off. He was about to leave the room when the mad scientist cleared his throat,

"We should check your wounds Infinite, and the new Phantom Ruby, make sure it's all working as it should be." He pats the table the jackal had been laying on not that long ago.

Infinite nods and complies, taking his seat on the table, where Eggman starts analysing the Ruby in his chest, asking if there was any more pain in his side. Once the jackal said no, the doctor stepped away with a grin spread under his bushy moustache; he looked pleased with himself, another experiment having gone to plan.

"We will win this fight Zero." Eggman stated, and Infinite held back a growl at his old name, "And when we do, I'll bring back your little friend. But don't let it all go to your head. I've lost to Sonic multiple times; we're finally on the brink of victory. If you do anything to let me down, consider yourself out of the Eggman Empire."

The jackal was silent for a moment, watching his ally, "I... Understand Doctor, I won't lose again." He wasn't sure if it was advise or a warning, but he'll take it anyway.

"Thank you." He said again, before jumping down to the floor.

"It's nothing, I am a scientist after all." The doctor chuckled to himself, "But you better prepare yourself Infinite, we'll be going into the final stages of battle any day now. And I now have word that Sonic's past self is here to try and fight us. So keep on high alert."

"Will do." His teammate nodded, "The final stages of battle; do you mean Prototype Sun?"

The evil genius only chuckled devilishly, his moustache twitching as if a tail in excitement,

"Get your things ready, we need to be fully prepared for this fight if we're going to win."

"Aye Doctor." Infinite nodded, before leaving the room.

Prototype Sun was a fun little project the jackal had witness Dr. Eggman working on the past few weeks. To think it was finally ready for use... Any day now and (Y/N) will be in Infinite's arms again.

That sounded like such a nice plan. This was going to be fun.

Ahhhhh I'm so sorry these are so short ;A; there just isn't much to add to them, but hopefully if all goes well, the next (and final) chapter will be a long one! Thanks everyone for reading this, even if it was a pile of fiery dumpster trash. See ya'll next week!
