As much as I tried, I failed to fall back asleep once we arrived back at the house. Instead, I laid on my bed and stared at my dark ceiling. Six forty-five, and I stumbled out of bed. As soon as my foot hit the floor, I cringed. Why hadn't they given me crutches? Didn't they know how difficult it would be to walk? Sighing, I walked around my room a little to get used to it. Though I was left with a bit of a limp, I had re-learned a skill I knew my whole life.
A quick shower that involved me leaning against the wall, a change of clothes, and a hobble down the stairs. As I entered the kitchen, I saw the glass was completely cleaned up. Memories of the night before hung in the still air. She would be exhausted at work today, and I knew it, yet she didn't seem to care as it happened.
As I grabbed an apple from the fridge, I realized how tired I would be at school. Three hours of sleep. An injured leg.
Yup. School would definitely be no trouble at all. With another sigh, I ate the apple and threw the core into the trash can, before grabbing my bag and beginning the excruciating walk to school. As I moved across the sidewalks, I began dreading more and more than all I had was a flimsy wrap and nothing to keep me stable. Maybe I was overreacting, maybe the pain was all in my head, but it still hurt. A lot.
By the time I got to school, I still had a slight limp but the pain had nearly become numb. I walked into class and instantly Erin noticed me. "Hey Justin. Wait, you're limping, what happened?"
"Nothing really," I answered, realizing how embarrassing the story really was. I dropped a glass on my foot and now I can hardly walk.
"Justin, what happened?" I sighed and sat down in my desk. "Tell me, please."
"Fine." I rolled up my pant leg to reveal the wrap, slightly stained with blood. "I was getting a drink of water last night and I dropped a glass. It fell on the floor and shattered."
"Oh my gosh, are you okay?" I nodded, though the fact that she cared this much almost made me smile.
"Yeah, I'll be alright."
"So, I'm going to guess you still don't have the essay written?" My eyes shot open.
"No. I don't. I completely forgot about it. How many days do we have left?"
"One."
"Have you written it yet?"
"No. Battlefield Ruins kept me distracted."
"Same here. That was a lot of fun, by the way." She smiled at me, making my heart skip a beat.
"I thought so too. You know, if you wanted to, we could meet at my house after school today and work on the essay. If it was okay with your parents." She was inviting me to her house. This was really happening.
"Sounds like a plan. Meet you after school in the library?" She nodded before hearing the bell ring and turning to face the front. I couldn't wipe the smile off of my face. As long as I was home before my parents, everything would be fine.
Classes passed and I was still smiling. Lunch time came and I was instantly bombarded with questions.
"Why so smiley?" Guude asked.
"Got a date with your girlfriend?" Anderz asked, earning a playful smack on the arm.
"She's not my girlfriend, first of all. We're just friends. Also, it's not a date. We're working on essays."
