Draco laid on the floor beside the fireplace reading one of the books Harry had gifted him. It was Hamlet. Draco was familiar with muggle books because of Hermione. He could never own any because if his father knew, he'd burn them. Remus and Sirius talked to each other on the sofa. They wanted to spend time with Draco before leaving to the party.
His arms got tired from lifting up the book so he pulled out his wand. He charmed it to make it float in front of him. He played with his wand between his finger, spinning it like a drumstick.
Suddenly, an envelope flew down from the fireplace and landed on the floor next to him. He sat up and picked up the letter. It was sealed with the Malfoy emblem. He ripped open the letter quickly.
"Who is it from?" Remus asked, looking at the letter suspiciously. Draco's eyes frantically scanned the letter.
"My mother." Draco mumbled.
My dearest Draco,
Severus tells me you have found somewhere safe to hide. Please do not leave there. The Dark Lord will kill you if he see's you again. He's told everyone you're a traitor. You mustn't return to school. They'll find you before you get there. You did the right thing by running away. I'm so happy to know you're safe. I just wanted to write to you to let you know I'm okay. The dungeons are a bit cold but it's manageable. My only concern was you but now that I know you are safe, I can relax. I hope you like the gift I sent you. As long as you wear it, I'll always be close to you. Severus will send this letter to you. Don't worry about me. I'll be okay. Take care of yourself Draco.
I love you.
"Draco, are you alright?" Sirius got up to approach the boy. Draco didn't realize he was crying. He got up quickly, reading the letter over again.
"Excuse me." His voice cracked. He rushed passed Sirius and up the stairs. Sirius and Remus had chased after him. Draco ignored them and entered what was now his room.
"Colloportus." He slammed the door shut and spelled it to lock. He put a silencing charm on the room and walked over to his desk. He slammed the letter on the table. His breathing became rapid. Sadness turned into anger. I shouldn't have left her. I shouldn't have been a coward. She's in the dungeons because of me.
He felt his body heat up. His ears began ringing. He covered his ears and fell to his knees, growling in frustration. He pulled at his hair and sobbed. It's all my fault. It's all my fault. She's in danger because of me. It's all my fault.
Draco felt a stinging pain in this finger tips. He shouted in pain as claws came out. He watched in horror. Is this supposed to happen? Fuck it. He pulled up his left sleeve and clawed across his dark mark. He didn't mind the pain. It made him feel something.
"Alohamora." Remus said, pointing his wand at the door. It didn't work. Remus tried again and succeeded. Draco was covered in his blood, sitting on the floor. Remus ran up to him and quickly spoke healing spells. Sirius stared wide eyed at the boy in front of him.
"I tried to get rid of it." Draco said. His expression was now blank. His claws have retracted.
"Draco, you could've killed yourself." Remus said as he sat Draco down on the bed.
"Would that have been so bad?" Draco said in a low voice. His whole mood changed, he wasn't the playful boy he used to be. He was lifeless and numb now. He stared blankly at the floor.
"Don't think like that Draco. What happened?" Remus rubbed circles on Draco's back soothingly. Draco shook his head and let out a sob.
"I could've prevented this. I should've stayed." He looked down at his left arm. The scratching he had done didn't effect the dark mark at all. "I should've obeyed."
