“Come on, Cal. Let’s get out of here.” I said, already on the move.
Cal followed me. Right when we reached the trees that bordered the clearing, I froze.
Oh, don’t leave, said a familiar dark voice. You know you want those berries so badly.
I looked over to Cal, wondering if he heard the same thing I did. He was clutching his head with his front paws as if trying to get the voice out of his head.
Okay, at least I’m not crazy, I thought.
Of course you’re not crazy, dear, it said again.
“Okay, I don’t know who you are, or what you are, but get out of my head and get out of my life!” I commanded the voice.
Oh, so you really don’t want to know about your sister... Alright, if that’s how it----
“Wait! What do you know about my sister?” I interrupted.
I could almost sense the voice smirking. Many things child, her exact location, her condition... whatever you could possibly want to know about her.
“Can you help me please? I’ll do anything.”
Of course I can help you. I want to help you. It’s just that you never let me...
“I will! I will let you!” I desperately said. “Wait, where are you?”
I am right behind you dear.
I turned around, my eyes searching for this person. But all I saw behind me was the bush.
“I don’t see you anywhere.”
Yes, you do child. I’m right in front of you.
Again all I found was the bush.
“I still can’t find you.”
The voice turned cold. ARE YOU BLIND? Uh, I mean, look carefully, dear.
I had no idea what this voice was talking about.
But then I realized where it was. From the bush I felt a cold presence. The voice was the bush.
“You’re a, a, a... bush?” I said in disbelief.
I AM A SPIRIT, YOU ---- but the voice immediately stopped whatever it was going to say. What I mean to say is that I am a spirit that can take form of many things.
“You mean that you’re dead?”
Let’s not say dead, child. Let us say “not alive”.
“I don’t understand! How are you still.... There’s no possible way to... GHOSTS DON’T EXIST!” I screamed out of frustration.
I AM A SPIRIT, FOR CRYING OUT LOUD. Dear, you don’t understand. Spirits are NOT ghosts. Spirits are the essence of a person who is not alive any more. Not dead, just not alive. Stuck right in the middle. Oh dear! I have to go. How time flies! I will see you soon, my dear.
“No, wait!” I frantically yelled at the bush, “ You haven’t even told me your name yet!”
Call me... Danger.
~~~~~
A shiver ran down my spine. Ok, that was really creepy. What type of name was Danger? Oh, and I bet the spirit’s last name is Uss. Danger Uss. Ha.
Don’t judge me. I knew that I needed my strange sense of humour to get me through this expedition. I had to be able to keep myself somewhat happy, and keep myself from spiraling downward into insanity by thinking depressing thoughts.
So as I went through the day, getting things done like tending to my still painful toe, I kept myself company by continuously muttering meaningless things to Cal. He never seemed to mind, he always somehow managed to find a comfy spot on the ground and plop down there, contently listening to my ramblings.
