Chapter 3
“From childhood's hour I have not been. As others were, I have not seen. As others saw, I could not awaken. My heart to joy at the same tone. And all I loved, I loved alone. ― Edgar Allan Poe
The sunlight cascaded down through the trees illuminating our makeshift tent. The orange parachute shone brightly making everything below it glow orange as well. Everyone else was still sleeping, their faces peaceful and undisturbed. They all fell asleep last night, but I didn’t. I sat up waiting. Waiting for something or someone to attack but it never came. I waited for Jonah or Jasper to get up during the night and try to kill us, I waited for everyone to try to leave me behind but it never came.
I was so confused, we’re criminals stranded somewhere we had never been to before. Why on earth were they concerned with make friends and saving people? I thought first instinct would be every man for himself, that everyone else was just extra baggage that would slow you down. But, not these guys. Just staring at them I felt a warmth spread through my body, I almost felt as though I belonged with them, that we were all meant to be together.
“What are you thinking about little one?” Odin whispered, making me jump in surprise.
I clutched my heart, trying to slow it down, “Jesus Odin!”
He laughed quietly, clearly amused by my terror, “You looked so concentrated, like you were contemplating life or something.”
“Oh um, nothing. It was nothing,” I dismissed.
“If you say so little one, now how about we wake up the other and go and find some food because I don’t know about you but I’m hungry!” He mused.
“Ok, on three. One…two…three,” I whispered.
We hopped up and started shaking everyone awake, yelling in their faces. All three of them woke with a start, panic flitting across their faces. Jasper jumped up at lightening pace, his face wild and confused. I fell over laughing, his crazy face embedded in my brain. I hit the ground trying to control my laughter but I couldn’t help it, every time I looked up at him I dissolved into more fits of laughter. Poppy joined in my laughing when she realised what I was going off about.
“You guys are retarded,” Jonah muttered, pulling himself up to look at us.
“I second that,” Jasper said dropping back down on his sleeping bag.
I got up and plopped myself own Jasper’s bed, “Admit it, you were scared.” I leaned my face close to his and smiled wickedly.
“Well of course I was! You idiots woke me up by screaming in my face! Who wouldn’t be scared?” He cried in exasperation.
“Me,” I said smugly.
“You what?” He asked stupidly.
“I wouldn’t be scared,” I said.
“That’s easy for you to say you weren’t the one getting screamed at!” He screeched.
I yawned loudly, tears springing to my eyes in absolutely exhaustion. It was safe to say I got less than two hours sleep. I was starting to feel it, not only physically but mentally too. I felt sluggish and not myself. I kept yawning, it was as if my body was trying to make sleep, but I was fighting it.
