as jungkook and taehyung became distant, not talking to each other on Instagram, too scared to say anything to the other, worried it will make the situation worse.  jungkook stalked taehyungs Instagram, and the other did the same with his. every new picture taehyung saw hit the nail on the head. all the memories with him, and the times with jimin and hoseok. the times had to end somehow, and this just wasn't how he wanted it to.

taehyung put his phone on his bed, sitting up and walking into his closet, picking out his favorite hoodie, his signature red one. the one that jungkook wore many times before in the dark when his room got cold and tae was left with nothing.

he slipped it on over his skin, pulling the sleeves up and pulling his hands inside, so his skin wasn't visible. he pulled on his favorite pair of sweatpants and fumbled with the feet holes, before finally relaxing back onto his bed and pulling out his phone again.

the last day of high school, and then he'll be out of here.

his bus alarm went off on his phone, and taehyung quickly turned it off and tiptoed to his door, opening it with a small creak, and stepping out. quickly shuffling down the hallway with his head down and his eyes glued to the floor, every step he took worried him that his father would wake up.

he reached the door and fumbled with the handle, before quietly opening it and closed it behind him. taehyung grinned and bolted away from the house, running through the darkness of the morning.

taehyung sips at his water as he watches the other students discussing their day, all seemingly having a pretty good time. the hustle and bustle of all the kids putting their things into their bags for the last time, and saying their goodbyes to all of their friends, who they'll probably see tomorrow. the summer would be nice to spend alone, contrary to others, but there was someone he wanted to see.

he wanted to see jungkook at least once or twice, and the thought of not seeing him made him want to cry.

but he had to hold it in.

the sound of the wind rushing by him as he walked home whispered in his ear, making him shiver.

It's later — about a month later — that gets tangled up in his head, the sharp and pain and crunch of it, the shards of glass, the broken bones. taehyung has ideas, details, but they're so specific that it's like he can't see the picture around them, puzzle pieces isolated on a wide bed of other scattered fragments. he can pick them up and turn them over in his mind, but there's no clarity to it, no meaning to anything.

in his dreams, there is a dark room with wide, menacing archways, industrial and abandoned; at the end of it sits a small booth. It reminds taehyung vaguely of carnivals, of vendors hawking tickets to enter a brightly colored world of sugar-sticky delights. but there's none of that here, nothing sweet on the air, only rust flaking off of columns and paint peeling away, light filtering weakly through a grimy skylight.

he jolts awake to a phone call, grabbing it and answering immediately without looking at the title of the name. taehyung sleepily rubbed his eyes and mumbled a quiet "hello?"

the person on the other side greeted him in a professional way, as they introduced themselves. the person was talking slowly, and it was making taehyung even more tired, just wanting to sleep in his bed. as they told taehyung he got accepted into the college of his choice, he wasn't listening, and he said thank you and said his goodbyes. he quickly sat his phone on his bed and layed his head back down, getting ready to sleep.

over in jungkook's world, he got the same call shortly after, and his reaction was entirely different. he stayed up packing and thinking about how he would see taehyung again, not realizing that it was over a month away.
