Turns out my grandparents are all about going out these days. Today I woke up to the following note:
Dear Mouse,
We are headed out to meet some friends we haven't seen in a long time and will probably be home late. There's food in the fridge for lunch. Breakfast I'm afraid you'll have to make yourself. And be a sweetheart, walk Roni for us if you wake up before 9 a.m. He wasn't feeling like going out when we were leaving. Don't walk him in the sun for too long, you know he doesn't handle it well.
Love, Granny
So that leaves me alone with the dogs again. I don't mind it really, I was already half through on planning my day by the time I got to the kitchen. The weather outside was nice today - warm and just a tad bit windy - making it exellent for curling on the hammoc with a nice book to read. Breakfast was going to be my favourite of course - pancakes! But first, walk the doggies.
"Roni, Rex we're going out." they were at my feet in a matter of seconds, both full of energy and ready to go. With wagging tails we got to the door where Roni's leash was and he sat to let me attach it. Rex wasn't one for leashes in the first place and since I'm certain he'll behave no matter the circumstances he rarely had to deal with one. It wasn't like Roni would just take off and never come back either, expecially concidering his age. The leash for him was simply habbit.
We walked the town in a slower pace than usual. Rex spotted a few squirrels here and there and since they were his only weakness he chased them for a while. When he couldn't catch them he just barked for a while under the tree while Roni was catching a break in the shade. We made a round in the dog park and were already heading home when we ran into Alexander and Lady again.
"Hey, there. A late morning walk for the dogs? And a long one at that. Late night or you simply slept in." He teased, sending a bright grin my way. "I here last night party was a good one, lasted all night and early morning..." this time he turned around while talking, following Lady with his gaze.
"I wouldn't know. Went home by 3 - Granny's orders." I smiled as well. I'd ment it when I'd said that I'd try being friends with Alexander which led me to the next question. "Hey, you've had breakfast? 'Cause I was thinking of some pancakes after I've walked these two? What do you say, an almost brunch at my place? Lady could play in the back with Rex and Roni if he doesn't fall asleep the second we go home." Granny wasn't home to be mad about it and I had no real plans for the day, so it all made perfect sense to me.
"Brunch, huh? Never done that. When you go to boarding school there's breakfast at 6 a.m., luch by 12 and diner again at 6p.m. But sure, brunch sounds nice." and so we walked the thirty minutes to my house while I was showing him all the magic tricks Rex knew.
"You've thought him how to crawl?!" he looked fairly impressed this far, but then again Rex was a very special dog. He's done an excellent heel, some loud "talk", obedient stay while witing for his release command as we got about 200m away and was now on his most recent outdoor trick - crawling.
"It wasn't easy and this one's mostly for fun but you should see him in the house - he opens doors, throws away trash in the bin and helps load the washing machine." I laughed at his dumbstruck expression. "Rex, break." at that he took off after yet another squirrel and turned the corner to the house a minute before we did. "Rex, home." he trotted unhappily to our front door as the squirrel got away to be chased another day.
"I can hardly believe it. He didn't even hasitate to listen. He turned directions in a flash, he might have fallen if not for all four legs." He blinked fast three times, I know, I counted. "How do you do that? I get that some dogs are naturals at those kind of things but Rex doesn't really seem to be one of them. I mean, if it was Roni I'd understand - he's calm and old enough, he's a velcro dog and he's a golden, It's just the sort of thing they'd do. But Rex is a GSD and while they are highly trainable it's mostly for the police and some army missions, not for loading loundry and opening doors. Even so, he still doesn't strike me as a dog who'd listen to anyone but you." that was quite a dog rant if you'd ask me. And it was cute. I knew all that bit it's good to know there are other crazy dog people like myself out there.
