chapter one

victory hayes knew marla winslow and teddy monrae were waiting for her by her locker so she shoved her english folder into her backpack and shot out of her seat right after mrs. parker dismissed class. marla and teddy laughed when victory appeared next to them.

"that's a new record, vic! mrs. parker dismissed you eleven minutes after the bell rang." victory opened her locker, a chuckle slipping past her lips. "she just ignores it!" teddy nodded her head in agreement. "she really does." victory pulled her notebook out of her locker, tucking it under her arm. "what were y'all talking about before i got over here?"

marla sighed. "corbyn isn't coming over tonight. ashley's got a bug and saskia doesn't want corbyn to give it to me. i asked teds if she wanted to spend the night-" "i said yes." teddy interjected. marla rolled her eyes playfully, a big smile on her face. "she said yes. what about you?"

victory started walking towards the front of the school, prompting teddy and marla to do the same. "sounds good, mar. i'll swing by my house and pack a bag after i talk to ms. anderson." teddy gave her a thumbs up. "we'll see you in a few, vic."

the three girls split up, each going in a different direction. victory turned the corner and walked into the music room. "ms. anderson?" victory looked around the room, checked the hallway, her teacher was nowhere to be found. she was about to leave when she noticed the piano in the corner.

her eyes lit up, she remembered the conversation she had with ms. anderson about the new instruments. victory knew she needed to get home and grab essential items but the piano was calling her name. she crossed the room without hesitation and slid onto the bench. she began to play the first song she'd ever learned: goodbye yellow brick road.

someone was playing piano. it was faint, but daniel seavey could hear chords and a girl's voice. "when are you gonna come down? when are you going to land?" he grabbed his bag and started to make his way towards the music room.

"where're you going, daniel?" jonah marais was confused, daniel's car was on the opposite side of the school. "you go on! i'll be right there." daniel didn't wait for a response, he wanted to see who was in the music room.

seconds later, he came to a stop in front of his favorite classroom. he frowned, the lights were off and the room was empty. whoever was singing was gone.
