Alana swirled the wine around in the bottom of her glass as she stared at the man across from her, wondering how this date had gone to hell so fast.
Words had apparently been coming out of his mouth for the past twenty minutes, but it all was the same exact thing to her. New shirt, new shoes, new money, this guy was the exact opposite of what she wanted for herself.
He hadn't asked her a single question about her all night and when she had spoken, he hadn't seemed that interested.
In her mind, she flashed back to a couple of days prior, when she had been excited when a new match had popped up on her screen. It had shown a man who had been unbelievably gorgeous and his profile depicted that he was a loving, caring guy who cared about the women that he was with. He had even put "Great Listener" on his profile!
He looked at her and took a big sip of his wine, his tongue darting out to capture a few droplets that were on his lips. On another man, this action may have been appealing, but on him it was just plain disgusting.
He was looking at her as though he was undressing her right there on the spot, his eyes spending more time focused lower than her face.
She groaned internally when the waiter came over and asked what they wanted to eat, as he reminded her that there was still a lot of the date left.
Before she had found out that this guy was such an annoyance, she had agreed to go not only for dinner with him, but to also go on a walk through a nearby park afterwards.
She should have known better. The only men that wanted to take a romantic walks with her existed in her mind. The real truth was that the men that asked to go on walks were either murderers or men that could keep their eyes above a girl's neck.
Alana decided that she could file the man sitting across from her in the latter category.
As he moved onto another subject, his new apartment on 5th Ave, the call that Alana thought would never come finally did.
The man stopped what he was saying and watched as she bent to grab her purse.
The caller screen read REID, but Alana looked up at the man and said, "Oh my God. It's my mom. She never calls."
She slid the answer button to the left and excused herself from the table, pulling the hem of her dress down just in case the guy was trying to stare at her ass when she walked away.
"Hello?" she answered, making sure to sound really concerned just in case the man could hear her.
A chuckle came from the other end of the phone and a low, husky voice said, "Really? Was it that bad that you had to resort to the mother excuse?"
Alana's best friend, Reid Miller has been her best male friend since high school. He had a standing appointment with her twenty minutes into every single one of her dates if she felt as though she needed to make a run for it.
"Ugh Reid, you wouldn't even believe this guy! He can't even keep his eyes above my mouth for even a few seconds," she exclaimed. She turned to see that the man wasn't even concerned about her but was conversing with a young waitress who had obviously seen Alana's departure as an opportunity to move in on him.
"Ugh, now he's even hitting on the young waitress right now," she complained into the phone.
Reid laughed at the other end. "I told you, Lana. The only good date you're ever going to have is the one you go on with me."
Alana rolled her eyes and said, "Are you in the front of the restaurant right now?"
"You know it," Reid answered, "But I got a date in twenty so get a move on ok?"
