SEPTEMBER 22, 2018

I had a very early morning meeting. I had to be online by 6 am so I could attend the meeting set by my Palo Alto team at 2 pm, California time. While typing several items on my to-do list before logging onto our company portal, I heard my pretty neighbor talking quite gleefully. Fifteen minutes earlier, I heard what must-have-been her phone ringing when it stopped and I heard a stomp on the floor as though she had just been woken up abruptly by a literal wake-up call and had to run to get ready. Instead, I heard giggling and some muffled talk. Of course the clearer words, I did not understand. Learning a phonetic language such as Italian and Spanish came in easy for me. Korean? Not so much.

"Saranghae!! Saranghae!" That one was said a bit louder than most.

And I understood that.

It had been a hectic day. It was a Saturday but the Asia Pacific side of our operations needed further support so we had a late lunch meeting. I wanted to diffuse the stress and tension everyone had been feeling so in between discussions of important document clauses, I was breaking the ice by asking about K-dramas and K-pop. The meeting lasted all the way until close to 8 pm when, one of our female associates squealed and bounced on her feet.

"Wha... what?! What?! Did you win the lottery or something?!" I asked.

"Check her Instagram!" she responded.

"Whose Instagram account?" I asked, bewildered over what seemed to be the matter.

"Ye-jin's! She has just uploaded two consecutive videos of her and Binnie! And one has a heart filter!"
