Kruger National Park has an abundance of prey meaning it is the perfect habitat for lions but this is not were the Mapogo coalition started, overlapping the Kruger Park is a smaller park called Sabi Sands.

In the heart of Sabi Sands lived the Sparta Pride, in 2002 the pride had 10 cubs in total including five males who were unnamed at the time. These five male cubs would later on become known as Scar, Pretty Boy, Kinky Tail, MR T also known as Satan and Dreadlock also known as Rasta. They didn't know it yet but they would be documented from just a few months old right up to their last breaths and later become the legendary Mapogo coalition that every South African wildlife lover has heard of.

When the cubs were just a few months old their personalities drew filmmakers, biologists and big cat experts attention towards them. Famous big cat expert Dave Salmoni noticed the two younger males one standing out more than the other as he was more brash showing that he could be the next leader of a pride. Always close behind this young cub was his brother creating a friendship and bond that would last them a lifetime, as these two cubs grew older they became known as MR T and Kinky Tail.

The Sparta pride was especially good at hunting buffalo, once during a kill one of the male cubs lay down by his father growling and gulping down the warm flesh. Ian Van Wyk witnessed that incredible event and later said he thinks it was either Kinky Tail or MR T who ate with their father. According to Dave Salmoni as long as those five males stayed together it was evident that they were destined for greatness.
