Sadly usually only 1 in 8 male cubs survive to adulthood but luckily for the Mapogo's, cubs that are protected by a strong coalition have a better chance of surviving and they were protected by a coalition of two males known as the West Street brothers.

The Sparta pride was unique in its own way as they took hunting to another level, as they were a large pride the lionesses with the help of the two males would take down full grown Giraffe this was extremely dangerous as a single kick from a giraffe could kill a lion.

In 2002 the young Mapogo's; MR T, Kinky Tail, Dreadlock, Pretty Boy and Scar were between the age of six to eighteen months old. Due to being born into a pride of superb hunters they would have a future of hunting bigger prey than their parents, the Mapogo's diet would consist of hippo, Giraffe, young Rhino's and adult buffalo. But before they could become the hunters that they would later live to be they had to learn how to take down prey first, this meant being in the centre of the hunt which could put their lives in danger but it was the only way they would learn.

The Sparta Pride often took their cubs on hunts putting their lives at risk and unfortunately sometimes things would go wrong during a hunt. This is what happened to the young Mapogo's and their siblings when a herd of buffalo charged during a hunt blocking the cubs escape route. Buffalo are notorious for seeking out cubs before throwing them into the air or even going as far as to crush the cub to the ground with their horns in an attempt to kill the cub.

Unfortunately during that hunt a couple of the Sparta cubs did get killed by the buffalo.
