Chapter 2
Two weeks go by and we do not hear anything. Within those two weeks, I was reprimanded by mother for breaking the vase.
I tried to not think of that appointment two weeks ago and throw myself into helping my parents with the bakery.
Every morning I wake up around four to get to the bakery. I grab the flour and make a bunch of doughs for our breads and bagels. I make some cakes, pastries, and cookies prior to the open of the bakery. My parents do not thank me for helping out more than usual. Peter starts to take note that I have been coming to the bakery very early and leaving really late. On the third morning I come early, Peter is there putting his apron on.
"What are you doing here?" I ask as I tie my own apron on.
Peter looks down at his feet, the smiles. "I thought you would enjoy some company." Of course, Peter would think that. Last Christmas, Peter and I were outside running around and throwing snowballs at one another. Our cheeks were red with cold and from all the laughing we were doing. He charges at me and grabs my waist. Our faces were inches apart and I saw his eye flicker from mine to my mouth. He closes the gap and kiss me. I instantly pull back and scream at Peter. Ever since then things have felt weird between Peter and me. I only have seen him as a friend, actually no, I see him more as a brother. However, Peter sees me differently and always tries to find ways to be around me and tries to be subtle to let me know that he definitely still has feelings for me and that he will not give up on me.
I nod my head at Peter to knowledge what he said and I go to grab some measuring cups. "I actually like being here by myself, it's quiet and relaxing."
Peter's face falls and his cheeks blaze red, "Oh." For the rest of the morning before my father comes by, Peter and I work in an awkward silence. He seemed upset with me and I just felt weird with knowing that he has feelings for me. There were multiple times I could feel his eyes glued onto me and that just made my skin feel like a spider was walking all over my neck and that just made me itch.
The day went on with customers demanding our baked goods and for better service. With really only Peter and I running back and forth to bake, serve, and work the cash register it was hard to please all the customers. Some of the customers would walk away since they were sick and tired of waiting. Other customers would scream at us to hurry up.
I wish my parents could hire more help. My father would help, but he was so slow and would do more overseeing of Peter and I instead of really doing work.
Around five p.m. we had a few customers come into the bakery exclaiming that the royal family will be broadcasting a special announcement around nine p.m. tonight. There were murmurs that the special program will announce the prince's betrothed will be. Some others would talk about how they hope that this time they hope they could get the correct girl to be the princess.
Most of the girls who were announced as the prince's betrothed died a few days prior to their weddings. Their bodies would be found out in the forest and after a full moon. There has been a superstition that everyone in our country and schools would talk about and deeming the first full moon of the month as the shadow kissed moon.
I did not believe in superstitions or myths. They were just things to scare people into not going outside by themselves during the night or when the moon was full. It was kind of like how people say that people go crazy on certain nights every year. But, that is never the case. There is always something wrong with the person. I personally believed that the girls who went out on the shadow kissed moon were in the wrong place at the wrong time. Or I think their deaths were faked or some kind of conspiracy. You would think that all these girls who were betrothed to the prince would be heavily by the guards and could not escape the palace on their own. It just does not make sense. Maybe one of the royals such as the King or Prince did not simply like the girls and wanted them gone or they just knew in their hearts that those girls could never break the curse.
