Chapter 3
Twelve hours after the announcement, the Royal guard was here to collect me. A sharp knock echoed on the door. My mother fixed her hair and grasped the front of her robe before opening the front door.
Three Royal guards stood at our door in their black and gold uniforms. Nothing was out of place of place on them. Their uniforms were spotless and wrinkle free. Their hair was in a buzz cut and not overgrown. The three of them looked like they could be models and should not be in the guard.
I sighed through my nose and tried to hide my irritation. I went up to the Royal guards and looked them all straight in the eyes. "What do I need with me?" My voice was flat and uninterested in them and all of this.
Why did this have to happen to me? Why could there not be some other girl who had amazing test and examination scores or amazing genes. I was not something that was special for them. To them and the Royals I was just plain and boring.
The guard standing in the middle with brown skinned stepped forward and flashed me a sympathetic smile. "You may bring a bag of any valuables you may want to bring with you. No clothes or cosmetics are needed. Don't pack any firearms or weapons with you. If you do not have anything you want to bring, then we can just collect you and put you in the carriage to travel to the palace." The other two guards beside him just nodded their heads in agreement.
My blood felt like it boiled. Who were these men to come here so fast to collect me? Then, they just have the audacity to boss me around and not even introduce their selves to my parents or me? For all I know I was just leaving with people who were pretending to be the Royal guard.
"How do I even know you are a real guard?" I crossed my arms and schooled my face into a mask and tried to look uninterested in them. My back leaned against the banister to help keep my balance.
"Madam, believe us we are the Royal guard. My name is Captain Henderson," Captain Henderson nodded towards the other two guards, "and these two here are Erick Melton and Cassius White, they will be your personal guards from here on out."
Erick Melton was thin as a corn stalk with a blonde buzz cut. While Cassius White had white hair like his last name and was bulky with muscles. Cassius looked like he could take out anyone who came his way, but Erick looked like he was not strong at all. I wonder how on earth Erick even got into the Royal guard with how small he was.
I flash a quick smile and blow out a breath. "Whatever, give me a few minutes."
I turned around and walked up the crooked brown steps that creaked with every step you took. I walked down the narrow hallway, then turn to the first door on the left. My door creaked as I pushed the door in. Anyone could cross my room in a manner of seconds. I could touch both my arms to the walls when I held both arms out. It took about 50 steps to walk the whole room. It was a hovel, but it was mine. It was my respite and my sanctuary. It would never be that again. I would miss the musty scent. The walls were painted in a light lavender that was fading from seventeen years. My bed was a small cot with a few rumbled up cover that sat on the top of it.
It did not take me long to find out what I needed. I grabbed my stuff dragon that I have had since I was baby and my dragon blanket. I stuff them in one of my oversized bags that sit on top of one of my trunks. I bought this oversized bag a few years ago when I thought about running. It was one of my dreams to save up as much money I could get and be able to get the heck out of this village and somewhere else. There was some kingdoms and territories that stayed neutral and allowed you to create a whole new identity. I wanted to go to one of them, but saving up money was one of the hardest things I could ever do. It was hard to find ways to even save up money because my parents barely gave me a paycheck for working at the bakery. They called my paychecks my allowance, but they always took most of my paychecks and used them on food, utilities, and whatever they wanted. I was always left with only a few coins in the end.
