I smiled and threw my hand up in a wave as Lou waved at us from inside the cafe. I knew Cole winced at his father as he pushed my wheelchair into the small restaurant and over to where his dad was.A smile overtook my face as he hugged his dad and then Lou leaned down to give me a hug as well. "Hey hey! Long time no see, huh son?" He slapped a hand on Cole's back who just gave a sarcastic smile and sat down in the booth. Lou slid into the seat across from him, whilst I stayed at the end of the table, holding my father in laws cane for him.
Cole busied himself at looking at the menu and his hand found mine under the table when his dad turned to look at me. "How have you two been?"
I squeezed Cole's hand and smiled to his father. "Despite our circumstances, we're doing well enough. We finished renovating and fixing up our floor at HQ." I responded and he nodded as our server came over.
Cole brightened immediately and ordered pancakes and for me biscuits and gravy. "Oh and chocolate milk please." I piped in and smirked.
Lou turned his eyes on his son and tilted his head to one side. "Is everything all right?" I frowned as my husband froze, not looking up to meet his eyes. I gently tapped him with my foot and he looked up with the shake of his head.
"This just feels so... fake. Wrong. Like we shouldn't be getting together for breakfast the day before Y/n goes in for chemo." He grumbled and I slurped down my chocolate milk.
A sigh and I placed my hand on his. "Hey, it's okay. Just because things aren't great doesn't mean we can't hang out with your dad." Cole rolled his eyes and gave me a look.
Lou cleared his throat as our plates of food slid down in front of us. "I, for one, think both of you are very brave to be handling this as you are, with courage." I snatched up a napkin and coughed into it, quickly folding it and placing it in my lap afterwards. I didn't want to startle Lou with the amount of blood in the napkin, so I hid it from sight.
"Okay but can I please dye it, too?" Kai whined and I frowned.
"I regret letting you do this."
I sat in front of a mirror, Kai behind me, allowing him to do my hair one last time. Later that day, I was going to chemotherapy and I didn't know when my hair would fall out, so I gave him the opportunity while he still had it. He scoffed and me and winked.
"Please? It wouldn't last long."
"No, Kai!" I protested with a laugh. Nya giggled from her spot on her bed with Devin.
"You're the reason we cant have nice things."
Kai got to work with my hair, curling it and working his magic as I watched in the mirror. My fingers played absentmindedly with the sleeve of Cole's shirt I had stolen and claimed as mine, deep in thought.
"Have you guys had any missions recently? I feel out of the loop." I muttered, staring at my reflection.
Nya rolled over to lay on her stomach and my eyes met hers in the reflection. "Uh yeah. We've been helping around at the museum lately."
"Dr. Sanders?"
"Yeah. He might now something about our parents!"
I gasped and turned, making Kai burn himself with the curler (which I would have assumed would be impossible for the master of Fire but it's Kai so). "That's amazing! I'm so happy for you guys!"
Kai grumbled and stuck his burnt finger in his mouth like a toddler. "Yeah but it isn't as straight forward as it seems. Saunders is actually a master of time and now we're looking to stop him."
"Save the world and all that. Again." Nya piped up and rolled her eyes.
"Then why are you guys here? Shouldn't you be out with everyone else?" I frowned, confused. I knew Cole was out on a mission along with the rest of the team, but I hadn't assumed it to be a vital mission.
"We wanted to spend time with you today, Lux. You're important to us and you're going through something crazy today."
"We just want to be there for you today. Besides, the boys can definitely hold the fort down without Kai, he's non essential-"
"Hey!"
"But they might struggle without me and you." She came to kneel beside me and smiled. "Are you scared?" She asked with a small voice, suddenly serious.
I huffed and looked down at my hands and took a deep breath in. "I'm terrified. I'm terrified that something will happen between me and Cole. I'm scared that I'll die and he'll be left without me. I don't want to leave him. I don't want to die." I whispered, my voice tight and frail.
Kai stopped curling my hair, placing a hand on my shoulder and Nya took my hand in hers. I met her eyes as she wiped the tears from my face and gave me a warm smile.
"No matter what happens, we're here. For both of you."
I broke, tears streaming from my eyes and they pulled me into a hug, soothing my rasping sobs.
I pulled away from the embrace, a cough racking my body and making me shake and heave. Kai ran to the desk, retrieving a tissue for me to cough in. For a few minutes, I coughed into that tissue until it was so bloody, I needed another handful. Nya rubbed my back soothingly, reminding me to breath in a soft kind voice. Eventually, I regained my breath and leaned my shoulder into hers crying slow tears and letting my best friend tell me it was going to be okay.
