Cole panicked.
Around him, blasts and yelps of pain bombarded his ears. His heart thundered in his chest and for a second, he froze like a deer in blinding headlights. This was the moment where he had to make a choice-
Fight for ninjago
Or fight for her.
He shook his head clear again as he picked her up into his arms and slid to the side to avoid and Vermillion warrior. "Not now. I'm a little busy." Cole grumbled and barely managed to focus his mind for long enough to summon his energy dragon. He barely managed to climb on with his wife in his arms and dodge the snake all at once. Barely, he managed to finagle his hold on her and hold the reigns, casting the dragon upwards into the sky.
Brown eyes scanned the ground below for a spark of blue and the dragon spun a tight circle before flapping into a hover over Jay.
"Jay, we've got a problem. We need to go to the hospital right now!" Cole yelled to his brother in law below them, who looked up with wide, frightened eyes. Kai and Lloyd yelled for him to go, saying that they could hold down the fort and soon an electric blue dragon joined the sky a moment later.
Jay hovered next to Cole for a split second, his eyes finding the unconscious frame of his sister. Even with their tight hold on the reigns, his hands shook and his frame shuddered with fear and worry. The two dragons quickly dove downwards, racing towards help as fast as they could.
Sweaty, scared, and most definitely overwhelmed, the two bravest boys burst through the hospital doors, throwing orders and directions and information at any hospital staff that would listen. A few nurses barely managed to pry the unconscious form from Cole, him protesting every second that he should be with her and he shouldn't leave her side.
Just like the very first time they came into the hospital, both ninja were pushed aside as their beloved was swept away from them.
Jay was scared. Cole was angry.
The two sat in the awkwardly cold hospital room, monitors beeping every few seconds. They sat side by side on the provided seat, each leaning as close to her as they could. Cole held his head in his hands, fingers run through his hair and his vision blurry from the hot angered tears that framed his eyes. Jay has his arms wrapped around himself, a protective barrier between his heart and the world. His blue eyes stared at her, chest slowly rising and falling with the weight of each breath. Ginger hair was a mess and his head even more so as he processed what was going on at a million times the speed of light.
"I can't do this." Cole's voice was ragged and with each word, Jay's heart broke more, knowing the pain his friend was going through. "I can't lose her." His head shook with these words and he slammed his fists down on his knees, again and again, harder each time.
Jay was quick to throw his arms over Cole's, stopping him from hurting himself. "We've gotta be strong... for her." His blue eyes found his sister again and he shuddered, unable to put a cork in his emotions.
"She's the strong one, Jay. Not you or me. It's never been us that's strong, it's always been her."
"So then what happens if we loose our strength?"
The both had fallen into a fitful sleep, never fully asleep, only enough for the excruciating minutes to go by. Her husband had had enough, sliding to lay beside her on the small hospital bed, pulling her as close as he dared. His face a mess of tear stains, eyes swollen and puffy from his weeping, though he enjoyed the small amount of peace brought to his heart from her gentle, ragged breathing. Jay was curled into a small ball on the bench, making himself as small as he could to comfort himself in some shape or form.
Both started awake, sitting up in an instant at a small rap on the door as a doctor entered. Cole's hand found hers, a force of habit he had picked up whenever his heart thundered and mind raced with uncertainty. The doctor's eyes grazed over the three, landing on her with a sigh.
"We are going to have to take her into surgery."
Cole had never been one for pacing or feeling anxious, but then, as day bled into night, he was. He paced the length of the hospital hallway, feet silent as he and Jay awaited for any news. They had quickly been shoved out of the room as nurses came to sweep his wife from the room to prep her for surgery. Though they were the worlds saviors, Jay and Cole were pushed into a waiting room rather than being allowed to see her or watch the procedure.
Jay's temper had flared, gestures wild as he raced and demanded that they be allowed to watch. The nerves of steel from the nurses was alarmingly admirable as the two were left to wait. Eventually, some hours later, the rest of their team had come running in, throwing questions.
"How is she?"
"What happened?"
"Why are you guys out here?"
While Jay seethed, Cole had barely managed to explain the situation to his teammates, who bombarded him with hugs and reassuring words.
Little did they know, that a few doors down, doctors hunched over her body with scalpels and blood drenched sleeves, shouting wild and rapid commands as her monitor beeped slower and slower with each passing second.
I took a breath in and opened my eyes to see nothing but light.
"Y/n. Welcome home."
