Mike's P.O.V

"Will." was all he said.

We all looked at him confused. He looked up, avoiding all our eyes. "I prefer Will." we all nodded, not sure what else to do. "Okay Will, well dinner is almost done. Nancy will you help set the table?" she turned to Nancy who nodded and headed towards the kitchen. Ted went back to the living room and I knew better than to walk off. She probably wanted something from me too.

"Mike, show Will to your room. He already knows about sharing the bed. Just be polite and carry his bags." she then turned and left me and Will. I tried to get Holly off but she clung to me tighter like a leech. My shoulders slumped. "Guess I'll carry both." I said out loud and reached for his bag. He slowly held it out for me, keeping his book bag though. "Come on, we're upstairs. I did a lot of redecorating so that you feel comfortable." I stated. He just stared at me blankly. I frowned, and turned my attention on the impossible task of hauling his heavy bag up the stairs with Holly clung to my chest.

I started up the stairs, him trailing behind me. "I heard you like art, is that true?" I asked, trying to make conversation. "Yes." he whispered so low that I barely heard it. "Good because my mom bought so much art supplies I had to find a cart in the attic."

I heard him swallow hard and smiled to myself. It took a few minutes but we eventually made it to the top, my face red.  I leaned down to open the door but struggled. I stepped back to let him do it and he did. We went in and he looked around, amazed. I guess he liked it. I went to the bed and tried to get Holly off but she didn't want to. "There's room for your shoes in the closet and I made space for you in the drawers, the ones with your name on the sticky notes is yours." I explained and he nodded but didn't say anything.

"Oh my God! Holly get off!" I yelled still trying to rip her off but she just grabbed on tighter. "No!" she screamed back.

"Holly! Come downstairs!" mom called up the stairs and Holly held on even tighter for a second before finally letting go. She started crying as she ran out the room and downstairs. I dropped his heavy bag on the bed and sat down breathless. "What do you have in that bag? Rocks? A corpse? Bricks? The crown jewels?"

He shrugged, blushed, and dropped his gaze to the floor. This was going to be hard. He's VERY talkative. "You should take your shoes off, my mom hates mud in the house." I informed him and he nodded. He walked to the other side of the bed and pulled his sneakers off. I realized his socks were stained. They probably don't shop for the kids much at the orphanage.

"Would you like...to borrow some socks?" I offered and he looked over his shoulder. He jumped up and ran to the corner and covered himself with his arms and began to cry loudly. "Please! Don't hit me!" he begged.

I stood quickly. "What? I'm not going to hit you! Why would you think that?" I asked and walked over to him slowly. He opened on eye to look at me. "You're not gonna hit me?" he asked but didn't drop his arms. "No! Of course not!"

He slowly dropped his arms and rubbed his eyes. "Why would you think that?" I asked again. His face turned red and he continued to wipe his face. Suddenly he stood and walked past me without saying anything and left the room.

I stood frozen, not even turning to watch him leave. What did I say? I was just trying to help and be nice. I balled my fist before turning around and walking out the door. Where did he go? I let out a breath and just went back into the room and sat at my desk. What did he go through?

At dinner

"So Will, I know you've only been here about an hour or two but are you settling in just fine?" mom asked as she reached for the salad bowl and began scooping some onto her plate. He was sitting beside me so I caught his knee bouncing from the corner of my eye. He just looked down at his still empty plate and nodded slowly.
