Life itself is a question.
Do we serve a purpose on this Earth?
Do we all have a reason to be here in this life?
Is life even worth what we're going to get in our life span?
So many questions run through the human mind constantly, but everyone has a different answer. People with depression will say that they don't serve a purpose here. People who have a 'perfect' life with all of the rich things will say that we all have a reason to be on Earth. Holy, religious people will say that we need to fulfill our duties on Earth.
But me?
I live with depression. So, I'm obviously going to give you the depression answer. Or so, I used to. Up until I met this guy.
-
His name is Matthew Lee Espinosa. I met him at a therapy session for depressed people.
"Leianna, why don't you and Matt partner up for our next assignment?" Our therapy leader asked. I let out a deep sigh and sat by Matthew.
"You don't look so happy," He said.
I turned toward him for a moment as I spoke. "I'm not, I live with depression. Depression is the complete opposite of happy."
"I know how you feel."
"Yeah, sure you do. Believe it or not, I get that a lot. And, you know what? It's never true. No one will ever feel what I feel."
He sighed and we got to work. Our leader was making us do a 'Life Is Meant To Be Happy' poster. It was the stupidest thing I had ever done in my entire life.
We got finished and Matt left very quickly. I walked over to my therapy leader.
"Why did you pair us up?" I asked.
"Because he's going through the same thing as you. Every detail was the same. The wreck, the deaths, everything."
"So, he does know what I'm going through. He does know how I feel," I thought out loud to myself.
"Yeah, he does."
I walked out of the room searching for Matthew. I found him in the lobby.
"Waiting for someone?" I questioned.
"No one in particular, you?"
"You."
"Me?"
"Yeah, I came to say sorry. I sort of snapped at you about the whole 'I know how you feel' thing. I didn't know your back story," I said sitting next to him once more.
"You're fine, I knew your back story. I was just waiting until you figured out mine."
"Can I ask you your story?"
"Sure. My mom and dad had just dropped me off at my football practice and they were headed back home. They were five minutes from our house when a drunk driver hit them and killed them both," He said tears welling up in his eyes and his voice cracking.
"My mom and dad were driving by my friend's house while I was there, you know, just to check up. Uhm," A tear slipped my eye as I gulped.
"You promise you won't tell?" I asked. He only nodded, I guess because he didn't trust his voice at the moment.
"I was really drunk, pretty high, too. My friend had given me the keys to her car and I went outside. Well, I was pulling out of the driveway and I hit the gas pedal too hard, and went flying backward. Little did I know, I had just killed my parents."
"That's messed up, Leianna," Matt said.
"Why are you judging me?"
"I'm not."
"Then, why did you say 'that's pretty messed up.'?"
"Because I killed my parents, too."
I'm really proud of this chapter:)
