"Marian, Joseh. Your train will leave soon."

An almond-eyed girl stood up to 'Marian', scraping the green school chair back. The identical screech of chair legs echoed hers, then the two followed the office lady out without a word.

Ms. Krane and the five remaining students watched them leave, they were second last batch of their class to go. Marian avoided eye-contact with the barely poised teacher, especially. She would rather not to be haunted by those pity-filled, glassy eyes for the journey.

She passed the hallways and turns without hesitation. They were all the same to her and what is there to miss? The flickering bulbs that only did a half-decent job of lighting, with an electrical buzz? Or the ugly beige, sloppily painted walls of the classrooms that the staff tried to cover up with big roll up posters? Everything in this school was a run down mess. No wonder why they had to be transferred to a more advanced, better taught school in the City.

"You better go now."

Carmine adjusted his red, wool scarf, making it neat as it already was. She was fighting back tears that were welling up in the back of her eyes. She never wanted this day to come. But it finally did and all Carmine wished was to run away with him. Away from reality, hand in hand forever. Why couldn't dreams like hers turn into reality?

He took her shaking hands to his chest. "I'm sorry," he said.
