My thoughts are clouded by Mable, as per usual. I wish she could understand that as much as I like her I can't be with her. Her parents aren't as strict as mine.
If they found out that I've been fooling around with a girl for the past month they would freak out and disown me as there daughter.
I love my family far too much to give them up for one girl. Even if that girl is the most amazingly gorgeous woman in the entire world.
"Jezabell, Mable your friend is at the door, she wants to talk to you!" I hear my mom call from downstairs.
I almost jump up from this, what's Mable doing here? I run downstairs to the front door. There she is standing at the door with her cute new pixie hair cut.
I walk outside closing the door behind me, "What are you doing here?" I ask hugging her.
"Well, I was passing through you're neighborhood and I got off of work early, so I wanted to see you. Do you want to go somewhere?" She asks smiling sheepishly.
I nod smiling too, "I just want to get some shoes," She nods as I go inside getting shoes and socks. I tell my younger brother to tell our parents that I'm going out and I won't be home too late. My mom yells, overhearing the conversation, to be home by six.
I'm outside again balancing onto Mable to put on my shoe. She laughs knowing I've got horrible balance. Finally both shoes are on and we start to walk. I turn walking backwards in front of her.
"So when did you do this?" I stop to ruffle her hair with my hand.
"Yesterday, why do you like it?" She questions me, trying to comb her hair with her fingers.
"Yeah, it suits you" I smile starting to walk again,"So what are we doing?"
"I don't know, I just wanted to spend time with you" She says shrugging nonchalantly.
I blush looking at the ground, "Maybe we could go to the park and maybe get food? I'm starving," I ask.
"Do you want to walk all the way or get a cab? It looks like it's going to rain," She asks me, looking at the sky.
As if the clouds could hear us, rain starts to fall. We both run for cover Mable taking off her jacket holding it over me.
"You don't have to, keep yourself dry" I say pushing the jacket over to her.
"I don't want your parents on my ass when you get home wet," she says pushing the jacket back over me.
"Oh come on, I've gotten home looking like I went for a swim, with my clothes, and my parents didn't even bat an eye, " I say laughing a little thinking back. I start to get an idea.
I put on Mables jacket to free her hands and pull her out from under the roof.
"What are you doing you're going to be soked," she says trying to pull me back.
"No come dance," I ask her to join me waving my arms wildly and stupidly.
"What," she says laughing.
"Come on, you wouldn't want me looking like an idiot all by myself," I say pulling her again.
She laughs loudly now showing a big smile, "You do look like an idiot."
"Hey! You're supposed to say I look cute" I say faking offense crossing my arms.
"Oh Okey, I'll join you," she says starting to dance making me remember she's a horrible dancer, now I'm the one laughing loudly.
"Hey! You're not supposed to laugh you know I'm horrible at dancing" she says stopping to wrap her arms around me.
"Sorry, I can't help it you're just so horrible at dancing" I say continuing to dance.
The next few hours I try to learn her how to dance, but it's proven hopeless. She hasn't got a single rhythmic bone in her body. By the time it's six we're soking wet and no where near my house.
"How late do you need to be home by?" she asks.
"Oh, no how late is it?" I ask frantically trying to figure out how far we've wondered.
"Six thirty, why?" She says and asks looking frantic as well now.
"Shit, shit, shit I need to go my mom wanted me home before six" I try to explain running to get a cab.
"Okey it's Okey just tell them it was rush hour traffic making you late," she says stroking my cheek to calm me.
"Okey yeah you're right, goodbye," I say getting into a cab.
"Wait when everythings calmed down could you meet me again at the clocktower? At eight maybe?" She asks through the window.
"I'll try to" I nod as the cab starts to drive.
The first thing I hear walking through the door isn't as pleasant as the day.
"Jezabell what's the time on your watch?" My mom says sternly.
"18:43 Mom" I tell her.
"And when did I say I wanted you home" anger laced in her voice.
"At six I'm sorry Mable and I went a little far and then Rush hour Traf-" I'm cut off by mom.
"Then you plan for the traffic it's not your first night in New York you know how the Traffic is, so you plan for the traffic" My mom practically yells.
"And why are you wet?" my mom questions realizing I'm soked.
"I was in the rain," I say softly.
"Doing what?" she says clearly angry.
"Dancing," I answer feeling really small against my mothers anger.
"Oh and who's the child her or you?" she says but before I can answer continues "Don't even answer only you would go and dance in the rain like you're a 14 year old even though you're a 23 years old" she says a tear falling from my eye only my mom knew how to make me feel like I'm a child 24/7.
"Don't cry, I asked you to be here at six and not only do you show up forty minutes late, but you're soking wet. Go take a shower and come eat," She says waving the dish rag at the stairs.
I take a shower and by the time I'm done my mom has calmed down but I still feel small against her. I eat quickly going to my bedroom.
I know the only reason my mom gets so angry is because she can sense Mable isn't straight and she doesn't like me hanging out with her. So I make my decision to go and see her.
And quarter to eight my mom switches off my light and says goodnight.
I get up and walk to the window getting down with the fire escape. I get a cab to the clock tower.
There she is sitting looking the other way, "Mable" I say softly sad at what's about to come.
"Jezabell!" she says excitedly until she sees my expression.
"What's wrong, did you're mom say something?" She asks concerned.
I look down at my feet and begin, "Mable, she did say something, but it made me think and she only gets mad when I hang out with you," I stop wiping away a tear and then continue, "Don't get me wrong Mable I really like you and it isn't you I'm complaining about, but I love my family and they would never accept us."
"No please don't do this," she says sadly. I don't even need to look up to know that she's crying.
"I really do like you, but I couldn't live without my family so for me, I need to do this," I say finally looking up into her eyes, they break my heart at the sadness they hold.
"I need to say goodbye to you for the last time," I say kissing her cheek, but she flinches away from my lips and looks the other way.
I turn away and start walking, as if the clouds listened to us again they start crying with us.
