Chapter 15

-Sheila Allen-

"Hello?"

"We need to talk."

"That's why I called you earlier." I answered blandly to Riley. She sighed. "What's up."

"Meet me at the beach."

"Why?"

"Just show up."

"Riley I don't have time for this."

"And I don't have time for this!" she exclaimed. "Please just come to the beach." I was sick of her trying to pull me around, I don't even think I wanted to be friends with her anymore at this point. I let out a frustrated puff of air.

"You know what? No. Riley I just want to be alone-"

"And I don't want you to go through this alone, She!"

"You're the reason I'm mad in the first place! Do you have to keep bothering me and rubbing it in my face?!"

"I'm not even-"

"Good bye, Riley." I ended the call and shoved my phone into my pocket, feeling my fingers brush against the small piece of paper with Jonah's number on it.

Maybe it wasn't such a bad idea to go to homecoming with him. Maybe Jonah really was sorry. I smiled a little and put his number into my phone before paying for the groceries, and walking out to my car.

-Hunter Hayes-

Riley angrily threw her phone into the sand and I knew immediately it was a bad sign. She cried out in frustration and picking her phone back up, marched over to me.

"She said no, didn't she?"

"I don't know what to tell you Hunter, I tried, I'm really sorry."

"It's ok." I sighed, feeling my eyes getting a little watery as my fingers randomly plucked strings. "I guess my dad was right."

"He isn't right. Don't believe him Hunter." Riley got down on her knees so her face was level with mine, hand on my shoulder. "Sheila still isn't over you deep down. She loves you."

"Love isn't real." I huffed.

"It is too." she persisted.

"It isn't!" I yelled louder than I intended. "Do you realize that Sheila isn't the only reason I came up here, that it wasn't just to prove my dad wrong?! It's because if I don't prove him wrong, he's gonna make me go down the aisle with some gossipy gilled fish head that is such a snob to me, I hate her! I don't want to be with her, I want to be with Sheila!"

Riley didn't answer for a while, she stared at me dumbfounded. "Gossipy gilled fish head?" she didn't say it like she was amused, she said it like she was rather confused, suspicious. "And what do you mean you came up here? And your dad, isn't that practice more common in India?"

Guts...

I hadn't told Riley about my 'history', yet, but that yet was most likely going to be now. What if she ditched my plan? What if she ditched me?

"Riley, there's something I haven't told you about myself, and I'm scared that you'll freak out at me and leave, socials please be... Understanding?"

"Go ahead." she said calmly.

"I'm... I'm a mermaid."

Riley's eyes widened. "You're a mer-mermaid?"

"Well merman, I guess." I pointed out. "There is no love down in the ocean, we marry for money, for status, for royalty."

"There has to be love down there." Riley insisted. "I know it!"

"Love isn't real." I protested through gritted teeth. "It's stupid, when you R honk you found it, it just crushes you to pieces."

"That's only if you make a mistake, and this, this isn't a mistake. What you and Sheila have is real-"

"Stop it! You know what I'm saying is true! You humans are foolish! Why do you believe in love anyway?!"

"Because it's the closest thing we have to magic." she said calmly. "We may not have your healing powers or color changing tails, but love... It's all humans have."

"You... You know about that stuff? That mermaids can do?"

"I was a big fan of them when I was 14." she explained. "I know that something will happen when you touch that salt water, you'll become a merman again, and that's a mistake you can't make."

"It's no use." I mumbled. "I have to."

"No, you don't." she sighed. "I'm going home, but I better see you around sometime today, because I don't want you to go back. I believe in you." she smiled at me weakly before getting up and walking to her car, leaving me alone, with nothing but a guitar. Her car soon became a small dot, and I got up, walking to the pier. This was the same pier where I met Sheila, and from the edge where I remember she sat, I could see my favorite rock, and could almost imagine the kingdom under the surface of the water. I looked down at the waves gently lapping up the rocky sides, the thought of jumping down tempting. I wanted to go home, badly, but Riley didn't want me to, she said I could to it, she said love was the only magic I could posses right now. The thoughts swirled in my head and I laid down, feet dangling off the edge of the pier.

"Hunter!" I shot up, looking around. Who called my name? "Hunter! Down here!" I looked down to see none other than my wavy haired friend, Camden.
