~Rainbow~
None of the other RainWings like me.
I'm usually avoided, and while some are at least trying to be discreet about it, others will just look at me and go to the other side of the room.
Whenever I ask them why they seem to hate me so much, they always say, "You're just... different." Some in nicer ways than others.
Some say my horns are too long for a RainWing.
Others think the absence of wings is disturbing.
Most believe I'm not a good RainWing because I don't have venom.
All of them seem to hate the weird small eyebrow-horns I have.
Queen Darling has been nearly convinced to banish me from the kingdom about seven times. But every time, she decided to keep me. Reason being, I'm the only one willing and able to take care of all the eggs and dragonets the adult RainWings decided they didn't want to take care of.
Currently, there's about twenty dragonets under my care, all under the age of three. I teach them how to read, encourage them to find interests, and help them make friends. And there's only thirteen unwanted eggs, which is better than most years.
I'm five, and going to turn six when the moons are dark. I look forward to my hatchdays, because it's the only day all the dragonets do what I say, with little to (when I'm very lucky) no fuss. And sometimes, they even make me simple, claw-made gifts, like a snail shell necklace or a drawing of me (usually very messy, but I don't mind).
"Rainbow? Rainbow! Charming's biting Sparkle's wings again," Calls my young assistant.
"Here, Charming," I coo gently. "Bite this mango instead." Charming (1 year old), still latched on to Sparkle (1 year old), eyes the mango with suspicion. But he slowly lets go and trots over to eat the mango.
"Thanks, Rainbow," sighs my young assistant in relief. "I was afraid he would accidentally rip her wings."
"No problem, Toucan," I reply. "It is my job, after all."
Toucan is the only dragonet that helps me with my job. He's two years old, and when he's three, I'll ask Queen Darling if I can have him as an official assistant. He enjoys tutoring dragons in the subjects I teach, and if one asks, he can try to teach them subjects I don't.
"Is Sparkle getting any better at flying?"
"Well, no," Toucan admits, "but she can land on her claws now. Which is actually an improvement, so yes, a little."
"That's good to hear. Come on, let's go inside."
We stride into the underground burrow I made and go into the main entrance. To the left side are the rooms for the boys, and to the right are the girls. The ones that are two and older are in the first rooms, then the ones, then the youngest (which I usually put an older and willing dragonet in with them to make sure they're okay). My room is on the far wall, and in a room off mine is where I keep the eggs.
"Your hatchday's tomorrow. Are you going to do any special classes this year?"
"I dunno... Maybe I'll just do a full day of scale-control. They all seem to really enjoy that. But, hmm. Maybe I'll do a half-day with scale-control and numbers."
"You should do numbers first. Y'know, give them something to look forward to."
"Sounds good."
~The Next Day~
"Admirable, what does 3 + 4 make?"
