......

Mom and dad are out working, so I have to make supper tonight. I go to grab the carrots when there's a sudden rapping at the door. Daddy's home! I quickly open the door not to see what I was expecting. I look up to see a huge, muscular man wearing a black jumpsuit. He has barely any hair and a grim expression. He looks down at me with hard eyes and I know something bad has happened.

"Skylar Everest?" he asks, his mouth firm.

"Yes?"

"I am here to inform you of your parents' arrest, Alice and Jon Everest, for trespassing into the town hall's private files. You are to be evacuated and be taken to the orphanage immediately. Collect any belongings and come with me," he says, staring at me with cold hard eyes.

I don't know what to do, so I do what the big man says. I go to my cot and grab my few belongings and scurry into my mother's room. I grab her medallion off the trunk and go back to the door.

He's still standing there when I return. He takes me to the orphanage and when I ask to see my parents he refuses. He leaves and I know I'll never see my parents again. Even though there are a hundred kids around me for the first time ever I feel absolutely alone.

.....

I keep staring at him confused. The strange thing is I believe him. Not only does it make sense, but Tristin is serious. I can tell when he means something, and one of those times is now. He's telling the truth.

"Sky,"

"Yeah"

"Your parents were Banished because they know the secret of the Edge. Skylar, your parents... they are alive."

"What do you mean? They were Ban-nished. They have to be."

"Sky, the Edge is like a portal. It leads to another world."

"Tristan, you're not making any sense! A portal. Seriously?"

"Listen, I have proof. Do you really think I, including your parents are crazy. Trust me."

I keep staring at him confused. The strange thing is I believe him. Not only does it make sense, but Tristin is serious. I can tell when he means something, and one of those times is now. He's telling the truth.

"Tristin, I trust you."

"Thank you" he says real quiet and stares at me and I know he trusts me too. All of a sudden his arms are enveloping me into a hug. He smells like mint leaves and he's warm and comforting.

"Tristan?"

"Yeah?" he says his voice muffled.

"We're going to figure this out together, no matter what." I say

I have a feeling. A feeling deep in my gut. Some might call it courage. Some might call it determination. Even though it's hard, I will keep going. Even if it seems like the universe is trying to stop me, I will keep on going. I will find the truth. No one can stop me.
