Warning: Gory Chapter
I don't think people appreciate how fast your life can change.
One second, you can be an aspiring neurosurgeon who wants to apply to Stanford. A girl who gets straight As.
The next, you're almost killed in a tragic car wreck.
The red minivan slams into our car. I subconciously reach over to defend Wendy from the flying glass, but I see in her eyes what I never wanted to see.
That it's to late.
That she's dead.
Her once bright green eyes have no life in them. Even though the physical appearance of her eyes don't change, you can already tell.
She's gone.
I scream her name, but everything has been turned to mute, I can't hear anything. I look for mom. I need her to comfort me, to tell me that it'll be okay, like I was a child.
I see mom.
It's funny how much she looks like Wendy. They have the same nose, same bright red hair, same laugh lines.
And now, the same dull, lifeless eyes.
I scream again, sobbing. My eyes frantically search for dad.
I find him.
He's barely conscious, bleeding heavily on to the road. I wince as I realize that he has a compound fracture: a bone coming through his skin. I think it's his ulna coming through his skin. I crawl over to him. He looks up, just for a second, and gravs my arm with the arm that doesn't, you know, have a bone coming through it.
He squeezes my hand, just like he squeezed mom's before the crash.
I look down to asses myself. My white top is torn and soaked with blood. It takes me a moment to understand why.
Terror runs through me.
"Omi-gosh-I'm-missing-three-fingers-holy-sugar-why-doesn't-it-hurt?!"
I scream again. I hear an ambulance wailing in the distance. I tell myself to wait, to hold on until they arrive.
I try to keep screaming, but a feeling of utter exhaustion has settled upon me.
I black out once I see the red and blue lights.
