"Stella," the irritating voice pesters in my ear.
I swear my head's going to explode before I even finish writing this paragraph. For a punishment, our teacher's assigned me to write a summary of The Diary of a Young Girl with Calaway.
That bitch.
He taps his pen on the desk and I swear he's doing it deliberately.
"Yes, Calaway?" I give up and turn my head to face him.
"See, you should've been paying attention in history class." "Shut up, Calaway."
"Why does that book have eyes?"
I look towards the shelf where he's gesturing and groan. Cassia winks at me.
"You like me, hm?" he says, raising his eyebrows. I laugh.
"Why would I like you?"
He moves back in his seat and holds his chest.
"Ouch, that hurt, much."
I stare at the words on my screen. They stare back at me, mocking me. Gosh. It's only been ten minutes, but with the combination of the stress of getting this done and Calaway, I'm going to lose sanity and go full bitch Stella Arwood.
I check my watch. Half an hour till I'm meant to pick Tobey up from school. Shit.
"I'm taking this home with me."
"What-but we're meant to finish this together."
"I don't give a heck. You keep annoying me."
"I'm only breathing!"
"Exactly."
I pack my books and Chromebook into my bag and sling it over my shoulder.
I look towards the Librarian. She's heavily involved in a debate about books, practically invisible to the world around her.
I sit on the windowsill and slide off, my feet hitting the pavement under me.
Ouch. Ground shock.
I quickly run to the bus before it leaves without me. When I get to Mountainview Primary School, kids flock the entrance, playing tag through the doorways, bouncing balls, showing off some lame scooter trick.
I scan the area for a little blond kid and reckon there are millions. Oh, great.
"Stella!" Aha. Found him. My little cousin runs up to me, holding hands with a teacher.
"Hey, Tobes. How were your very first few days at school?"
"It's fun! I made so many friends," he exclaims, a grin lighting up his entire face, showing dimples.
I shake hands with the teacher.
"Stella." I introduce myself, though no doubt she knows who I am anyway.
"Miss Wilson, but you can call me Julie. You look familiar, did you go to Mountainview?"
"Yes, M-Julie." She smiles.
"See you on Thursday, Tobey!" she calls as we walk off.
