"I offered to drive you to the hospital."

"Yeah well, I don't need your hospitality, thanks. I can as easily just catch the bus."

"I wouldn't suggest that." I look towards Calaway.

"What do you mean by that?" He ruffles his dark messy charcoal hair.

"The professor told us to not meddle with time... ugh... who gives a crap. It's 14 March eh?"

"Yeah..." I drawl. He pales.

"Ok, you're not getting in a bus."

I give up. "Fine!"

I throw my hands in the air

I slide into the passenger seat of his car and snap on the seatbelt. He turns the key and loud horrible pop music starts blasting from the speakers. He turns it down, wincing.

"Jeez, you 2020 people have shit taste in music. That's at least something I can put in my assignment... if I ever return home." I genuinely laugh and he laughs along.

"Now, that's something we both agree on."

As he smiles at me, I feel an unfamiliar feeling arise in my stomach but brush it away.

My heart stops as I see the boy, pale as ever, eyes closed, clutching his teddy bear. He looks like an angel. He's the only one I'm soft for.

I trace his dimples with my fingertip.

"What happened?"

"He walked out onto the road and there was a car coming."

My heart breaks for him.

"Shit, I shouldn't have let Mum let him go to school..." I mutter under my breath.

I feel a hand on my shoulder and shiver. "Calaway?" I whisper.

"Is he ok?" he asks the nurse.

"Are you a relative?" He nods and I look at him. He pokes me in the stomach discreetly and gives me a look that he wants me to go along with it.

"I'm his brother. Crynn Arrowood." I nod in agreement. She looks suspicious for just a moment before smiling sadly.

"Well, he's not doing too good at the moment. But hopefully he'll get to go home in a few months, but even then he won't have recovered fully." she answers him.

"A few months?!" I yelp.

"The injuries he sustained were very severe, Miss Arrowood, people with this many broken bones don't recover straight away."

I sit at the side of his bed and stroke his hair, adjusting the teddy in his arms so he looks more peaceful.

"Hey, Stella. Stella. Stella!" I groan and wake up. I'm lying on a bench outside the ward.

Can't these hospitals afford something just a little bit better? My body is aching from the chair. It would probably be more comfortable sleeping on the hard cold linoleum floor.

Calaway hands me a muesli bar and a coffee.

"Here," he whispers. I thank him quietly and sit up.

"How long was I out?"

"A few hours."

"You stayed?" I ask.
