Chapter 18
Sabrina sat with Joe by the campfire that Joe had built for them. She laid her head on his shoulder, and he put his arm around her. Staring into the flames, she sighed, then spoke.
"I think Chief Douglas knows something," she said.
Joe rubbed her shoulder affectionately.
"Trust me, love," he said, "if he knew anything, I'd be dead and you'd be in jail. And we can't let that happen until The Boss gets what's coming to him."
Sabrina smiled, comforted by Joe's confidence.
"You're right," she said.
Then she stood up and reached for a roasting stick.
"Smores?" she asked with a smile.
As they roasted the marshmallows, Sabrina's mind kept drifting back to her grandma. Was she okay? Could she survive the weekend without Sabrina? What would happen to her if Sabrina failed in taking down The Boss? Sabrina was startled out of her thoughts by a burning sensation to her fingers. She'd been holding onto the roaster just above the wooden handle and the metal had gotten hot. She dropped the roaster with a yelp, scaring Joe.
"Are you alright?" he asked her as he dug a few ice cubes out of the cooler.
He tore up one of his shirts and wrapped the ice in it before putting it over Sabrina's fingers. Once he knew that she was okay, he joked, "That's what the handles are for, silly."
Sabrina smiled and playfully swatted at him with her uninjured hand. Joe laughed, then picked up his own roasting stick. He roasted Sabrina's marshmallow to her liking and made her smore for her. He then made one for himself. As they ate, he told her, "Everything will work out, love. You worry too much." He leaned over and kissed her on the forehead. She loved it when he did that. She smiled, knowing Joe was right.
