"Hey Robin! Sorry I'm a little late." Tim said. He was running towards the training grounds, where Robin was. He was reading an advanced tactics book.
"Oh, Tim. Did you remember to bring the Thunder tome I gave you?" Robin said.
"Yes, I have it right here!" Tim said. He pulled out a blue book with a lightning bolt symbol on the cover. "It still shocks me when I touch it. Is that normal?"
"Yes, that's normal. It'll stop doing that once you get used to it." Robin said.
"How long would that take?" Tim asked.
"I don't know. I've lost my memory of most things before meeting Chrom. I don't recall how long it took for me." Robin said.
"Oh, sorry. I forgot you lost your memory." Tim said.
"It's alright, Tim. Now then, ready to begin?" Robin asked.
"Yes. So, what should I do?" Tim asked.
"First, you need to focus yourself. Then you need to try to pull the energy from the tome." Tim said.
"Ok." Tim said. He closed his eyes, and tried to clear his mind. There was a pause for a few seconds. "Oh, it's no use. I can't clear my mind..."
"No, you've got it all wrong. You don't need to clear your mind. You need to focus yourself. It can be on anything. For example, I focus myself on my friends, and how I want to protect them. I've read that for first timers it can be good to talk about what you want to focus on with someone." Robin said. He sat down on a log. "What do you often find yourself thinking about?"
Tim sat next to him. "Well, I think about Elizabeth a lot..." he said.
"That's a good start. Why do you find yourself thinking of her a lot?" Robin asked.
"I think of her because she's one of the only people that actually listens to me and respects me back in my world... Yes, my family cares about me but they set unreasonable expectations for me. She's the only one that gets that... and since she isn't in the best place mentally, I want to protect her as much as possible from all of the people that make fun of her or judge her." Tim said.
"Hm. It seems that you really care about her. More than people your age normally care about their significant others." Robin said. "That's a very good thing. I think she's lucky to have someone like you." He smiled.
"Thanks, Robin." Tim said. He seemed very happy to hear that.
"Now, try again, but focus on her and how you want to protect her. Then draw the energy from the tome." Robin said.
"Ok..." Tim said. He tried just that. After a few seconds of pause, there was an electric energy in Tim's hand. "No way... it worked!!" he said with excitement.
"Great! Now, release it towards the practice dummy over there!" Robin said.
"Ok!" Tim held out his hand, and the energy shot out of his hand and hit the dummy. "I actually did it! Wow!" he said.
"Amazing job, Tim!" Robin said. "I'd say you learned how to use basic magic."
"Wait, basic?" Tim asked. "As in, there are harder to use types?"
"Well, yes." Robin said. "You've only learned Thunder, there's also the more advanced types, such as Elthunder, Arcthunder, and Thoron. Plus there is also different variants of those, such as Lightning, Ragnarok-"
"I think I get it. How would I go about using those?" Tim asked.
"Well, it's kind of like swordplay. You want to use the lower level sword until you get comfortable. Plus, if you touch a high level Thunder tome without proper training, you could temporarily paralyze your arm. The way you can tell if you're ready for the next tome is when you no longer feel the shock when you first touch it." Robin said.
"Well, we don't need my arm going out of commission. I kind of need that." Tim said.
"So tell me when you no longer feel a shock from that tome, and I'll give you an Elthunder tome." Robin said.
"I will. And thank you for teaching me." Tim said.
"No problem, Tim." Robin said. They both went their separate ways to get back to work.
