CHAPTER ONE: The Blinder and the Gold Dust Woman
THREE GYPSY CLANS RESIDED IN BIRMINGHAM.
There were the Lees, the Shelbys, and the Hearns, their leaders powerful and dangerous in different territories. Zilpha Lee was the matriarch of the Lee family, the head in charge. The Shelbys were led by Thomas Shelby, the second eldest Shelby brother, alongside the matriarch and aunt Polly Gray. Finneas Hearn was the leader of the Hearn family, leading a dynasty that stretched back to late mid 1800s. His wife, Kezia Hearn, was the matriarch of the Hearn family, a kind and caring woman with a love for a children.
Finneas and Kezia Hearn had five children at the start. Their first children were twins, a boy and a girl, the first heirs for the dynasty. The boy was named Theo, meaning Divine Gift, and the girl was named Tabitha, meaning graceful. The third and fourth children were both girls, named Penelope and Charity. The fifth and last was a boy, who was named Ocean, the second male heir.
During the Great War, Theo was called for the army, and fought in Belgium. He fought hard, but he didn't survive the battle, killed in action. Theo's death left his family devastated, Tabitha the most. They were twins, closer to each other then to their younger siblings, holding a strong bond. It was like a part of Tabitha's soul died when Theo died, and she felt it the moment it happened. She was
The Great War had ended in 1918, but the men didn't come back the same as when it began. It changed them, and the women and children in empty homes while their husbands, fathers, and sons were gone. The women who went to France as nurses changed as well, swing the chaos and death and war in front of their very eyes.
Tabitha was a nurse stationed in Western France and saw things she couldn't forget. The corpses of men soaked in blood, missing different types of body parts, and body parts Tabitha had to amputate so the the soldiers survived. Finneas wasn't able to fight for their country because of his bad health, which made him upset that he had to stay home while his two eldest children were away.
It was 1919, the war ended the year before, and things had been far for normal other than the Hearn family business booming, and with business came rivalry. The Hearns and the Lees were strong allies, but things had always been rocky with the Shelbys. A war began between the Hearns and the Shelbys, known as the Peaky Blinders, got in a fight with Finneas' cousins and were blinded by their peaky hats. The fighting had gone back and forth until Thomas Shelby and Finneas Hearn decided to sit down to seek some sort of peace between both families to stop the war.
Finneas had met with the Blinders son a couple occasions in the Hearn home, making sure his children were away so they stayed out of the dangerous business. One Saturday evening, the three Shelby brothers were in the home of Finneas Hearn, discussing the only way to make a permanent solution to end their feud. They sat in the family study, Kezia included since she was the matriarch.
