The weekend finally arrived and with no other hitches in the week, I felt a little confident about this try out. Even though soccer had never been my cup of tea, I felt like I could do it well if I tried.
Question was, did I want to try?
Cynthia called earlier this week and she was just as stressed as the last call. She still hadn't told my parents about the baby and I was sure she hadn't told Jake either. She told me that she was just trying to go to school and stay out of trouble. She also said she was trying to spend more time with Charlie to prepare for her own baby.
That kind of scared me because that meant she was thinking about keeping the baby.
Don't get me wrong, I like kids, but my sister was not good with them. She had little patience and got bored of things fast. Not to mention she was 18, and she wasn't exactly in the right place right now for a child.
I almost told her that too, but stopped. Cynthia would figure out if she wanted the kid. I was sure that she would give up the dream of being a teen Mom when the baby finally came.
She got bored of things fast.
As for my classes, things were finally becoming normal. I got used to the schedule pretty quickly. Now when the sun rose, I felt tired. The moon was prettier now when I could spend the time to look at it.
Gym was still a bit awkward. Mr. Jay was pretty off around me. Like he was waiting for me to put a hole in his head like I'd done with the wall.
If we were doing anything too physical, he would tell me to sit it out. Jane didn't see the problem with it and often volunteered to watch me for him. But I found it a bit annoying. Mr. Jay was treating me like I had some kind of problem, but I just did what he told me to do. He was punishing me for what, doing what he told me to do? I just don't get it.
One good thing was spending more time with Jane, though. And when I spent more time with Jane, I got to know a bit more about Victoria Asher. A rich kid from New York that loved soccer and loved even more to harrass Jane. According to Jane, Victoria wasn't anything scary, but I should still avoid her. When I asked why, she just said that Victoria was really good at giving people headaches.
Things have been normal, quiet for once since I got here and it was a little strange.
Then came Saturday. Try outs.
Taylor took me to the field with her, after I changed into my gym clothes, and when we got out there, I spotted Del and it made my stomach hurt.
That woman terrified me.
Mr. Jay was leading the try outs. He was standing by the passing testers, where they were busy kicking the ball back and forth, trying to successfully pass to each other.
Del was writing down the names of the kids coming to try out who showed up. And when I approached, she seemed a bit surprised.
"Miss Walker," Del announces, causing Mr. Jay to look up. "I had not expected you to come."
"Of course she was gonna come," Taylor says, nudging me with her elbow. "I'm gonna be in the stands, so do well and make me proud."
Del writes my name down and looks down at my shoes. "Do you have your own cleats, Miss Walker?"
"Uh, no, sorry. I was always more of a track person."
She doesn't say anything, just motions toward a cardboard box sitting on the bleachers before walking off.
I walk over to it and start to untie my shoes, as I sit down on the bleachers.
As I'm slipping them on, a shadow looms over me and I look up.
