"Nice to meet you, (Y/n). I'm Hanji."

You sat there perplexed, a million thoughts running through your head.

"Puzzle piece? Squad Hanji? Wha... what is going on?" You thought, a worried expression crossing both Erwin and Hanji's faces.

"A..ah! (Y/n) are you ok?" Hanji shouted, moving from behind the commander's desk to shake your shoulders a bit.

Knocking you out of your thoughts, you were met with Hanji's eyes right in front of you, worry, and another emotion you couldn't pin in her eyes. Letting out a small squeak, your face erupted in a fiery blush from the proximity of your new squad leader to your face.

"She's very cute..." You both thought as Hanji's cheeks tainted pint slightly before she backed up and grinned at you. You unconsciously placed your hands in between your legs, trying to make yourself look smaller.

"Well, welcome to Squad Hanji, (Y/n)! It'll be an honor to have you with us." She said, pulling you up into a hug. You prayed to whatever higher god there was that she couldn't feel your heart beating rapidly.

"Ye...yeah." You said, smiling slightly, running a hand through your hair before Hanji pulled you out into the hallway, saying something about how you were gonna have to switch dorm areas. You were distracted from how eccentric and bubbly she was, so the information went in one ear and out the other.

Once you two were out of the room, Levi turned to Erwin.

"Are you sure that this is a good idea? You know what (Y/n) means to me and I'll be damned if she gets hurt from being on an fucking elite squad, Erwin. There was a reason I wanted her on a lower-ranked team."

"She has lots of potential we can milk out of her, Levi. She's going to be fine with Hanji." Erwin said, resting his chin on the backs of his hand.

"Tch. You better be right. Hanji better take good care of her, or shitty glasses is gonna be in a world of trouble." He growled, walking out of the office.

Letting out a small chuckle, Erwin shook his head as the doors slammed shut.

-

Hanji had led you to her squadron bunking area, a few of her teammates in there.

"Ah! Molbit! Just in time," Hanji yelled, spooking the man, "This is (Y/n), our newest recruit." Molbit smiled at you, before showing Hanji a stack of papers.

Distracted by the new area, you missed the look Molbit gave you as Hanji complained about whatever information the papers held.

"Commander Hanji?" You finally said after a few minutes, looking out a window that gave you a good view of the sparse woods.

"Hm? What is it, (L/n)?" She hummed, lifting her head from the stack of papers to see you standing in front of the window, the wind tousling your hair in an angelic manner. A soft pink hue graced your cheeks as you made eye contact with her. The both of you were caught in a trance, unaware of the other soldiers making bets on you.

"Two drinks on me if they end up dating."

"No way. The newbie isn't into girls. I'll give you my dinner for a week."

Snapping out of your trance with Hanji, your cheeks flared up from their words.

"So..sorry! You said I needed to switch bunks?..." You questioned, your voice small.

"That's correct! C'mon, I'll show you it." Hanji said softly, giving you a soft smile as she got up from the desk she was at.

Leading you down a corridor, Hanji made small talk with you, but it didn't seem awkward to you at all.

"So I hear you're from a small town near Utgard castle." She said, turning to look back at you slightly.

"I wouldn't necessarily call it a town. I was born there, but my mom moved into the underground to satisfy her drinking needs. I basically grew up around Levi, him being a brother to me." You explained, following Hanji into an empty bunk room.

"You basically get a room to yourself because there's an odd number of people on the team now," Hanji explained, and lied. There wasn't an odd number anymore, but the only extra bunk was with Hanji herself. Figuring that would be an awkward situation to explain and deal with, she figured that she could just force the short stack to give her another room.

"It looks nice!" You hummed, dragging a hand over the dresser.

"God, I'm becoming Levi." You thought as you checked your palm for dust.

Hanji hummed in agreement, watching you plop on the bed, it bouncing under your sudden movement. Giggling, you grinned up at Hanji, and she swore she felt her heart stop for a minute.

"Goddamnit Hanji get yourself together!" She mentally screamed, hoping you wouldn't notice the darkening blush on her cheeks. But you did, but said nothing.

"You can't develop feelings for her! Levi would murder you!" She scolded herself, shaking her head.

"Anyway. Here's the key to your room. Added privacy and whatnot. My room is right next door, and you're free to come over whenever. But you should go get your clothes and whatever extras you have in your old bunk. You're pretty much free for the rest of the day, so I'd recommend getting acquainted with the rest of the squad." She explained to you, placing the key in your hand with a wink.

Once she left the room, you flung yourself backwards on the bed, your heart beating fast.

"Oh shit. I'm in for a fucking ride." You moaned, curling up into a ball on the bed. After a few moments, you started kicking your legs in a frantic way. You couldn't be developing feelings, not this early in a friendship.

Friendship.

You exhaled sharply and sat up on your bed, running a hand through your hair.

"I can keep this a friendship. Hanji is a friend and only a friend." You thought to yourself, trying to convince yourself that as you got up and grabbed the key. Exiting the room, you closed it before shuffling down the hall. Love wasn't needed to survive in this world, especially when you could lose it in the blink of an eye.

-

"So... Hanji-san..." Nifa said, watching Hanji walk into the common area where the fourth. The latter grunted in response, not looking forward to the stack of papers to go through from Erwin.

"Do you have an interest in (Y/n)?" She asked bluntly, making Hanji drop the pen in her hand.

"Wh..what makes you say that?" Hanji exclaimed, looking at Nifa with wide eyes. Nifa smiled, Hanji's stutter gave her away.

"Just asking. Also, you might wanna stop stuttering. You do that when you like something, or someone, too much." She teased before heading down to the cafeteria for lunch.

Sitting back down at her desk, Hanji set her head in her hands, letting out a cry of frustration. It was obvious she had a liking towards her new squad member, but she couldn't risk a relationship with so much on the line.
