I recently went to see the actual ballet, The Nutcracker. I'm sorry if this next sentence offends anyone.
I never thought I'd say this ever in my life, but I liked the Barbie version better.
But its different than it sounds. I can appreciate the hard work put into the ballet. As a former dancer, I can even appreciate the difficulty of the dance, and the ginormous sacrifice it takes to put on any tutu made entirely of itchy tool. (Plus the arm bands, also made of tool. Those suck too.)
So don't get me wrong. I appreciate it. My biggest problem is the absence of words. I want a story, and the wordless ballet doesn't hardly offer one.
That's what I liked about the Barbie version (I have two little sisters. That's why I've seen it.) It was almost the same old Nutcraker, but not quite. There was adventure, magic, the heroes showed weakness, there was extreme peril, a teeny tiny hint of romance, and a purpose. In short, it had everything that most of my favorite novels do. (Percy Jackson, maybe Eragon, Harry Potter)
Of course there was that classic, obnoxious Barbie aspect that just has to be in every show. A dumb scene here where all that happens is sparkly magic from the queen snow fairy. A stupid scene there at the end where they just twirl for a few minutes. Etc.
All in all, the Barbie version was epic in . . . most . . . places. The ballet nearly bored me to tears. By the end, my mind was as numb as my hands (from clapping for the finale).
Sorry if this one was a little dry, or if you like Barbie shows and/or The Nutcracker. I tried to insert some humorous parts.
You should comment if you have an idea for a rant. I may or may not do it, though. It depends on how much personal experience I have.
See ya!
