As the door opened a tall slender brunette walked out. She looked like what most ten girls wish they could be... Almost perfect features. She was followed by a slightly shorter blonde. The blonde was in a pair of black slacks and a white blouse. She wave good bye to the charming brunette as she walked over to another girl. This girl was shorter, more round and had short brown hair. Worry and dread crossed her face as she was approached by the Blonde.
"You must be Katie. I am Dr. Veronica Atlie." She held her hand out accompanied by a warm smile. Katie shook the nice lady's hand along with a nod. "Nice to meet you. Shall we head into my office?" Her hand directed the young girl. The room had one of those large stuffed lions, a couple plants and what Katie assumed as pictures of the Doctors dogs. The couch looked more comfortable then previous sitting arrangements in counselling offices.
This room made Katie feel more at ease. "What a nice room you have here. I like the pictures of your dogs." the couch did not squeak as she sat on it. It was always embarrassing and annoying when that happened. In all honesty it drove Katie batty, but it was not the cause of this appointment. She was here due to some choices she had been making recently.
Katie was a Junior in High School and had started dating an older boy, in her parents eyes was way too old for their 17 year old daughter. For the most part he probably was, but she did not care for he was only 26. Age was just a number and Jacob treated Katie descent.... "So Katie what are your interests?" This question puzzled Katie... Usually shrinks wanted to start with the situation first thing. "Don't you want to start with what brought me here in the first place?" Dr. Veronica shook her head. "We are not going to talk about any of that during this appointment. I want to first get to know Katie before I try to help you with any other current struggles."
A big smile spread across her face, for the first time someone wanted to get to know here instead of just diagnose her. Maybe, just maybe this would work out. She started to talk about her drawings and the passion she has for animals. They talked until the session was over and Katie left to go home. All that Katie could think about was how nice it was to talk about her interests and not what was wrong with her. The ride home was short and pleasant now if the rest of the night would go as well as the afternoon.
