“Just … go!”
These words rang loudly in Gabriel’s ears. That tone was so unlike her.
What could Laeleth possibly be feeling? It was an unexpected and unsettling change in her he did not recognize.Gabriel was nearing the city. The walk had seemed rather insignificant and short with all of the cares on his mind. He doubted himself and how he had handled her apparent anger. He could be unsure at times how to interact with her. What could have upset her so much and so quickly?
She had always been truthful and vocal with him; trusting him completely with all of her troubles and fears. He steeled his resolve however and determined that the effect her emotions had on his heart would not interfere with his mission.
Gabriel soon found himself before the iron gates that surrounded Lord Eston’s court.
There were two guardsmen posted outside them. In their hands they carried pole like spears. The royal crest of Verzstani was emblazoned on the banners behind them.“Halt and state your business!” One of the guards pointed his spear directly at Gabriel and eyed him with a warning glance.
“I need to speak with the steward; it cannot wait,” Gabriel replied directly.
“Lord Eston is a rather busy and important man and cannot be disturbed without invitation.”
The guard was stern and regarded Gabriel with a look of disdain. But Gabriel was determined and would not be so quickly turned away.
His tone was stiff and flat as he replied, “Perhaps you would like to tell your ‘important’ commander that Gabriel Belmont wishes to see him.” His hand lingered around the handle of the scarlet whip that was attached to his belt. He had no personal intention to create any trouble, but was prepared for any they might cause. At the mention of the name the guards eyed each other briefly. They were all too familiar with Brenner’s opinions of this stranger even though they had never met him.
But Eston had made it very clear that their “guests” were always welcome in his court. They withdrew to the side and whispered together in hushed voices. After a few moments they signaled the gate to be opened.
They stood at attention glaring at Gabriel none too kindly as he passed. The gates clanged behind him and he paused momentarily to survey the courtyard.
It was lush and regal with many topiary planters about. The height of summer hung beautifully upon each flower and tree.
An elegant fountain was directly in the center, flowing merrily. Its many spouts were adorned with sea serpents. Blue and white flowers trailed all along the well-kept lawns and pathway.
But this beauty surrounding him did little to lift his mood.Gabriel continued on until he reached some massive green and gilded doors. He lifted the heavy knocker and it crashed against the wood with a resounding thud.
He waited patiently and noticed how entirely still and serene this court was. There were no guards within the gates and all the area seemed to be abandoned. After a few moments the door withdrew on its hinges.
A timid, balding man of only about five feet tall stood in the doorway gazing up at Gabriel with an anxious look.“What can I do for you, Sir?” the servant asked as politely as he could muster for one so nervous.
He did not recognize Gabriel and was wary of his dark demeanor, his impressive posture, and stern, focused eyes.“I request immediate audience with your steward, the lord Eston” Gabriel explained himself once again. The look on his face was rather unfriendly and uninviting. He did not feel too generous or patient.
Despite his attempt to forget, Laeleth’s behavior still overshadowed his thoughts and kept him in a grim mood. The small man began to stammer, “Well, good Sir, the steward is quite indisposed at the moment and is not seeing anyone at this time.” The servant was wringing his hands anxiously as he diverted his gaze from Gabriel’s increasingly stern one. “I can let him know you came by and ...
Wait! Stop! …You cannot enter!’’
