MIND OVER MATTER
CHAPTER TWO: MAPS
THE last thing Cady had expected to experience was an extreme rocking that forced her head to jolt forward from the sudden movements.
Moving to raise her head to its previous position, she felt an arm rest across her chest as another rocking forced them all forward against their seatbelts.
It was John.
He turned to look at her- his face as expressionless as the Chancellors as he'd sent them to their deaths- "you're welcome." he mumbled quickly retracting his arm, odd.
Giving the boy another look, she couldn't recognize him, she didn't think she'd ever seen him anywhere, which may have been true depending on what station he'd grown up in.
"So, are you new here? To lock up I mean." he paused as if he was trying to reword his next sentence, "cause I don't think I ever saw you in the Earth skills class they gave us."
She furrowed her brows, had there been more than one Earth skills class?
She'd always been forced to take the class alone with a single teacher, no classmates, no friends, and certainly no Zachary.
Cady shook her head in response, "no, I- um, they made me take the class in solidarity." she watched as John frowned, "what a shame, you woulda made plenty of friends." she fought back a dry chuckle, she would have made more enemies than friends.
Especially considering the son of the guard she'd killed was more than likely among them. She was almost certain he was. And when she found him, she'd kill him too.
"What were you in for?" he questioned his eyes meeting hers as he cocked his head to look at the girl. She found her mouth turning dry, what was she supposed to say? She'd killed a guard? And managed to stab another on the way out? She'd more than likely be dead before the next morning, so in reality, she knew it wouldn't harm anyone to put it out there.
Hopefully.
"I killed a guard..."
The silence continued as her head sunk in embarrassment, then she heard John chuckle.
Raising her head to look at him, she watched as a small smile crossed his lips, "I set fire to the quarters of the officer that took my Dad."
So they'd committed similar- if not almost the same- crimes, big deal. Maybe it would equate to her being able to trust him.
"If it makes you feel better..." he began bringing his lips close to her ear so he could whisper, "you can tell people you just stole something, I won't tell anyone."
Cady found herself smiling, which was odd, she could only ever remember smiling with her parents and her brother, but it seemed John had the same effect on her.
