Chapter 21

The Moon Talked to Me

The sound of the shot gun was so recognizable that I suddenly remember how those Clint Eastwood movies ended with Clint clutching his 44 magnum and walks away.

The scene unfolding in my very eyes looks like the next high paid action movie. Tatiana throwing some of the daggers, Logan and Marione are both using their swords and Brookes spinning one of the two spears.

"Nyx!" Marione shouted in front of me.

"I can hear you. You don't need to shout!" I shouted back.

The Ballista screams as Brookes stabs it with the titanium spear head. The monster counters it and slaps Brookes with the back of its claws. I gasp as Brookes went flying and hit the concrete wall of the palace.

"Nyx, fetch!"

Marione throws me the spear and I caught its body, the head almost piercing the skin in my neck.

The feel of the spear is enlightening, and then I remember the league, my spear lance training. I spin the spear in my hand and smirks.

Game on.

I charged forward, my eyes are suddenly aware of the Ballista’s every move. How its wings flaps harshly but the wind only goes to one direction so that means she can’t use that when the attacker is behind her. How her claws are only useful when she’s in the air and how her mouth open wide that shows her set of sharp teeth but only causes that loud irritating screech.

Then the Ballista suddenly lifted off several inches off the ground and by then I knew, that’s my cue. I surged forward, my legs shaking as I run towards the Ballista. It may have been the fastest run I could have ever made if only this stupid dress wasn’t in the way. The Ballista roared in victory as she sees me coming, maybe she thinks I have finally fallen to her trap. But the least she knew, she’s the one who have fallen to mine.

As I neared her, I saw how her lips are tugged upward, smiling that disgusting way only she can do. I looked at her eyes, those transparent blue eyes.

Then I did something that surprised her, I winked at her just before I slide between her feathery legs.

As big as she was, I knew that she can’t turn around that easily so I did what I planned on doing. I stood up behind her and plunged the spear deep into her body. The Ballista roared, which I guess is how she cries. She took off but then falls to the muddy ground. Only then did I realize that there are now hundreds of palace guards in formation in front of the Ballista.

“Phoebe! Get out of there!” Logan shouted in my left.

Then I realized that the Ballista is staring at me, rage in her eyes. By then I felt my ribcage screaming in pain as the monster struck me with its claws, square in the chest. The blow knocked me off my feet and I went flying.

All I remembered was the gust of wind blowing my hair as I hit the concrete wall of the palace. I fell to the ground with a quiet thud as my body screams in complete agony. All the air in my lungs was knocked out of my body and I coughed blood.

I willed myself to stand up but even the thought of moving a muscle in my body brought me pain. I stayed there, in the bed of grass, breathing in gulps as my body shook in pain for every ounce of oxygen that reaches my bruised lungs.

I opened my eyes and realized that a lone tear escaped its way to my cheek. Then I stare straight to the starry night. It is a magnificent sight. My eyes then landed to the full moon staring down at me. ‘You think I’m hopeless huh?’ I said in my mind, trying to have a conversation with the moon.
