Dean Winchester is the country's most deadly serial killer.

He'd like to think he still gets to keep that title, despite having been locked up in the most secure prison in the United States for seven years now. He's officially spent more time here than he did killing people, which, he must admit, he definitely deserves. He did spend almost six years murdering hundreds of people in cold blood, after all.

For a while, it was going fine. He had a roof over his head and food laid out for him every day, an experience he'd never had before. Even as a kid, he was always moving, and meals were a luxury he couldn't always afford. It was a nice change of pace.

He has friends here. Most of them are murderers, too. They wouldn't be here if they weren't. It's nice, knowing that these people understand exactly what he did and why, and they can't judge him for it when they've done the same -- albeit with a much smaller body count. He even considers some of the guards friends. They're friendly enough. Dean promised to be in his best behavior, and the guards appreciate the break from the constant infighting among the other prisoners.

And, of course, Dean's happy because he has a visitor. It took Castiel a few years to finally get his brother's okay to come visit, but when that went well, FBI Director Michael Novak was a little more lax with the rules. Castiel would come visit once a month or so, and they'd get to talking about things like Castiel's return to the Bureau or funny jokes from Dean's inmate friends.

It doesn't stay nice for long.

Dean may have a roof over his head, but it's dull and gray and lifeless, and he's trapped in his own little room more often than not. Food may be a given, but it's disgusting and he pities his poor taste buds. He may have befriended some inmates, but they're cold and rude and always ready to pick fights with one another. He may have befriended some guards, but they're still wary of him, never giving him a single personal detail about their lives.

And, of course, there's Castiel.

Castiel was the reason he got caught. Dean risked everything just to get to talk to him, and the guy just happened to be at the house Dean has just murdered a man in cold blood before he could make his escape. But Dean never held that against him; they were friends, in a weird sort of way. Over the course of many visits, Dean had essentially spilled his entire life story to the guy, and Castiel had come back with quite a few stories of his own.

But after a year or so, his visits grew less frequent, and when he did show up, it wasn't for as long. He was quiet, agitated, and always itching to leave. It's been over a year since the last time he was here, and Dean still doesn't know if the guy's ever coming back. That was really his only motivation to stay, once everything else stopped holding his interest. He didn't think he'd lose Castiel, too.

So, Dean does what any self-respecting serial killer does when they're bored.

He breaks out of prison.
