"Do you want to talk about it, babe?" Luke asked his boyfriend. Ashton wrapped his arms around Luke's thin waist tighter, and buried his head into the lanky boy's collar bone.
"Yes. Well, no, but I kind of do?" he said, sounding unsure. Luke waited patiently for him to make up his mind, and then Ashton looked up at him with wide, sad eyes.
"I uh, I've been having a hard time dealing with it." he said, and Luke knew he was talking about the recent death of his grandma.
"I mean, she practically raised me when I was really young. My dad loved his mom more than anything, and mom looked up to her, she always called her at the end of the week. My grandma would surprise me by picking me up from school every couple weeks." he said, with a trembling lip.
"You know, Lauren got her haircut the day she died. I took her to get it, since everyone was busy staying with grandma in the hospital. I picked Lauren up from school and took her to check in on grandma, then we left. We left with my grandma's weak mumbles of you go get that haircut baby, and then you come back and show me. By the time we made it back, Lauren had been taken to meet up with Harry, and my dad pulled me aside and told me to come with him."
"Ash, let's go for a ride." his father said, putting an arm around the wide-eyed boy.
"Where are we going?" Ashton asked, following along as his dad guided him to the elevators.
"Let's go get your grandma a slurpee. Those are the only things she can keep down anymore." he said, stepping out of the elevator and going towards his car. Ashton got in the passenger seat, and waited for his dad to say whatever he was wanting to say.
He didn't though, until they were on their way back. Ashton had decided to get a sparkling water and a banana, since he hadn't been eating very much these days. The stress was too much for him to be hungry.
"So, Ashton. They, uh..the doctors. They're going to put grandma to sleep." he said, glancing at Ashton and back to the road.
"Sleep? S-She sleeps most of the time anyway, why would they--"
"No, Ash, they're going to induce a prolonged sleep on her." he said sadly, biting his lip. It was obvious his father wanted to cry, and Ashton looked at him with those big, sad hazel eyes.
"Then I got back to the hospital, I was sitting in the chair next to my grandma's bed. I was holding one of her small warm hands in two of mine, and I just watched her go from dozing off to confusedly looking around the room. I had been crying--no, I had been sobbing. I whispered how much I loved her, saying 'so so much, I love you so much.' " Ashton paused to wipe the tears on his face, but Luke just squeezed him closer and pressed a kiss to his forehead.
"She--She looked at me with these exhausted eyes, and I could tell she didn't want to fight anymore. She couldn't even respond to me, just barely squeezing my hand in response. I remember thinking about what my dad had told me in the car.
"Dad, when will she wake up?" he asked, fearing the answer. His dad swallowed thickly, and Ashton watched his throat move with it.
"Buddy, I don't know that she will." he said sadly.
Ashton looked down at his lap, twisting his long fingers.
"Oh..." he whispered.
Conversation ended there.
"Lauren never got to show my grandma her haircut. She was asleep by then, and later that night while we were in the waiting room trying to distract ourselves, my mom came running out with tears on her f-face." Ashton sniffled, rubbing at his nose.
"'You have to come now! It happened, she just stopped breathing, the monitor beeped loudly, come quickly!' she said. We ran through the hospital so fast, but the nurses knew. They didn't try to stop our rush." he whispered darkly, with a humorless chuckle.
"Harry had been torn up about it. He was in the room watching my grandma breathe slowly, when suddenly she coughed up blood. Then the heart monitor went erratic, declaring everyone's worst fears. My cousin Calum was there, and he held me for a a good hour while Lauren clinged to me. We were all crying all over each other, but we just couldn't stop." Luke began running his fingertips lightly over Ashton's back, listening intently.
"I accidentally earned the respect of my grandma's sisters that day. They had been there and were just as torn as we were. Everyone stayed in there to cry for a good half hour. After everyone left the room I asked to stay behind, but asked Calum to stay with me. He held my hand while I held my grandma's hand for the last time. I brushed the hair from her face, and kissed her forehead. Her body was cold. It felt wrong, I didn't feel like this was my grandma. It wasn't the grandma whose bed I had been laying in while we giggled over Spanish soap operas just a year earlier. Not the same grandma who had prepared a huge meal for me the last time I was at her house. Grandma's sisters seemed to appreciate that, because they are very fond of me now. They even told me I was the most beautiful of all the children in the family." Ashton chuckled, and Luke did too. He was visibly shaking now, so Luke laced their fingers together.
"I-I don't want to talk about the funeral, Lukey. You were there." Luke was, and he remembered holding Ashton for hours before, during, and after. His parents didn't protest when he offered to take Ashton back to Luke's flat to sleep.
"You don't have to if you don't feel comfortable baby, thank you for sharing this with me. Do you feel better?" he asked. Ashton leaned up to press a kiss to his cheek, and hugged him closer.
"I do, thank you Lukey." he whispered.
"Listening to you when you need me is not anything you need to thank me for, love. Get some rest now, I know you're tired." he whispered back. With a final kiss shared and mumbled i love you's, they drifted off quickly.
