23 years ago:
I was walking home from the average day of a third grader, asked my mom if I could go outside to the forest out back, receiving the usual response; "Walk Miles, and be home before dinner!" followed by me replying; "Ok." Yep. Ok. No pun there. Haha. Well, Denis was normally in the woods -same woods- at the same time I was. I wish I could have done more....
Oh well! I walked into the forest, took a left a Spring Owl-what we called the little fat tree that looked like an owl almost always covered in some plant or another-, up Wolf Hill-a hill some wolf-like dog who's collar said it's name was Wolfie, hence Wolf Hill, liked to go up and sit and sometimes, for some reason, mainly Wednesdays. howled.-, down the other side, and I saw him. Denis. On a chair, with a rope around his neck, one end tied to the tree above him, with one foot off.
"NO! STOP! PLEASE!" I yelled, scaring him, but he successfully didn't choke himself.
"W-w-who are y-you, and w-w-w-what do y-y-you w-w-want?" He said, the look in his eyes... hard to describe with anything other than terrified.
"I'm Miles. I live on the other side of the forest. I want to know why?"
"I'm D-D-Denis, and I'm just... tired... I guess... done with the world...."
"Why?"
"M-my dad is a-a-a-abusive, my mother died-d after I was born- just after -, my d-d-dad m-m-murdered my s-s-sister, my only-y friend-d, and my-my bro-other, and-" He went on for about an hour, and after a week of stopping him from doing that, we became friends.
-----2 weeks before present day.-----
"Three years straight, I've been calling her my sister." He laughed. I smiled. Denis rarely laughs. "She's taken the role of it!"
"She sure has, Den. 'Denis, this isn't safe. Denis, do this, Denis, do that.' " I added, mocking his 'sister'. It's nice that someone other than Denis's cousin and I are helping him with anything he needs help with. Karmi is a good friend.
