Only A Little More

Heavy puffs of air, hot, cramped, tired, hands trembling. He had been walking for hours now, never stopping. The tunnel wall still as crumbly as ever, the darkness still as black as ever.

He hadn't taken a break, nor changed his rhythmic walk.

Step. Step. Step. One at a time, one after the other. One step, one thought, one breath.

What if Aiden finds out? Step. What if he hates him for this? Step. What if he doesn't make it to the end? Step. Avavell, after every step, thought of another thing, another little thorn that wedged itself in his side. Another sting to his heart.

He knew Aiden loved him, and he knew how deep and wonderful it's well was, but that didn't stop his brain from feeding him lies. Granted, lies he was making, but not on purpose. What if he was right? Just a little? No, Aiden loves him.... Right?

This was always the boy's struggle. He had trouble trusting people, even after so long. But he knew when he got back Aiden was there, waiting for him.

His brows furrowed. All this thinking was exhausting, nothing he should dwell on.

Marching on. Marching on. "Go on, keep going." A voice echoed, and he shook his head. Better to keep those memories locked up, out of the way.

The tunnel sloped downwards, and his rhythm was thrown off, having to slow down so he wouldn't fall. The ground, which he had been looking at while brewing in his thoughts, seemed nicer, lighter.

Lighter. Lighter.... Light! He was near the end! Only a little more to go. "Only a little more to go." He thought.

   Only a little more.
